Yes, I agree. I think 8 or 10 episodes was great when it was just a few shows. We got some really amazing shows that way, that were really memorable and just fantastic, tight, well-crafted storytelling. But now, especially for those of us who get our shows on streaming services, 8-10 episodes of a show that is in its first or second season, means that you are done with a show after a week, and then you have to dive back in to the show store and find something else that looks interesting.
Apparently tv used to be about characters and themes, not so much about plot. Now, every episode also has to have a perfect plot with amazing twists and turns, incredible visuals, something we've never seen before !11!!!!!1! I think that is why seasons are so much shorter, because it's really hard to come up with 22 episodes worth of exciting, tight, unexpected plot turns, especially when there is so much tv out there competing for viewer attention. When it was mainly about characters, your 22 episodes were about hanging out with the characters. You might tolerate some less exciting episodes because of the comfort of seeing familiar characters on screen, a familiar routine etc.
At the same time, there are so many things competing for viewer attention, that I doubt the new mode is going away. Any show that has a few less-than-stellar episodes will lose viewers to whatever shiny thing is on the internet right now.
