Sandra Bullock too old for Ryan Reynolds. Who should have been Margaret?

I'm sure this has been mentioned before, but, while I enjoyed this movie, I was distracted by the 12 year age difference between Margaret and Andrew. I think Sandra Bullock is too mature, now, for these types of frivolous fluff movies. I could think of a lot of younger actresses, maybe a few years older than Ryan Reynolds, who could have done as well or better playing Margaret. Emily Blunt, Kate Hudson, Cameron Diaz, Mila Kunis. Just a short list. Who do you think would have been a better fit?

reply

Nobody would have been a better fit. The contrast in ages plays well against the comedic and dramatic conflicts raised by the necessity for Margaret to get her act together if she wants to stay in the U.S.

reply

I agree with the OP, the age difference was just too distracting and gross to forget. No doubt, Sandra Bullock was a typecast and that role should have gone to someone younger. Besides it looked kinda weird, and also Sandra Bullock is closer to Mary Steenburgen's age (Andrew's mother)

And for those saying no one would have done better in the role but Bullock cant prove sh*t and are completely bullsh*ting

SB was 43 at time of filming.
RR was 31 at time of filming...

MOTHER?!?!?!?

Did they ever say what the age difference was? I know there was one, but is it as large as 12 years, or is that just the age difference between the actors, not the characters? Because actors can portray people that are older/younger than they are. In this movie, the age difference is probably more like a 5-6 years, but it looked larger because at the beginning Margaret was wound up so tight she looked older, just by the way she dressed and wore her hair! She was focused, focused, focused on her job and she had all those defenses that she just aged herself...because in the final scene, she looked years younger! The clothes she wore were less rigid and her hair was down, and so were her defenses because her experience in Alaska changed her.

Or maybe this is just because I'm not a huge fan of huge age differences yet I really like this movie, so I'm trying to find a way to reconcile. I don't think it would have been as good with any of those other actresses mentioned.

Well Julia Roberts was originally supposed to play Margret......yeah, so just be grateful that thee awesome Sandra Bullocks played her instead. I thought she did an amazing job. She's beautiful, funny, and genuinely nice. Thumbs up from me :)

for me the movie is more about the "opposite attracts" thing.

and the more ryan reynolds and sandra bullock does not fit,the more the story gets effective.

its funny and it gives inspiration to older woman to find true love inspite of their age and social status.

and also this provide reasons to those young men on why they should give it a try on older woman.a very nice movie, indeed.

Ha ha ha! You people are so age-ist. My husband s 12 years younger than me and I was his boss. He proposed to me 6 months after we met. We have 3 fab kids (my daughter, his two sons).

Do you often write comments on IMDB about actors who are 12 years older than actresses? Get with modern times.

i totally disagree i think sandra looked fabulous in this movie and i could actually see ryan/sandra as a couple in real life if he wasn't married...i don't think ryan looked too young for sandra at all...also, ryan loved working w/her so much that she called sandra and told her please lets do another movie together..in interviews ryan has said how gorgeous sandra was as well, he said she is so fun to work w/and has a great sense of humor...so be looking out for another sandra/ryan movie in the future, i for one can't wait bc their chemistry was off the charts :) sandra has chemistry w/every actor she's worked w/ryan is one of my fave but i also love Keanu Reeves as well, the have a certain chemistry that just is amazing. he is another one who praises her beauty and how much he would love to work w/her again...

ldddhunter - Right on! Ryan/Sandra as a couple!
However I think she should've married Keanu Reeves.

xs3,once a woman has been married she is no longer a spinster. Everybody's explained this to you,yet you keep incorrectly using the word. You have an obsession with age and seem to enjoy using words incorrectly.

reply

Keanu is also younger than her

By a couple of months! Get real!!!

I am watching this movie right now. The age difference does mar the plot at one point. Gammie breaks out the quilt she calls "the babymaker". At 46 years old Margaret (Bullock) probably wouldn't need to worry about an accidental pregnancy.

reply

I know of a lady who had her first birth at the age of 54.

Ripley's puts the age much much higher...

Also, there was absolutely no mention of a specific age for her.

Her "assumed" age should be upper 30's.

Her actual age when filming was 43!

reply

Actually that can be a time when women are extremely fertile. Usually right before they enter menopause, a woman can be extremely fertile. Also, the film was shot when Bullock was only around 43/44. They never gave the character an age, but I was assuming they had her character in late 30's and his in early 30's, making their characters not as wide a spread as the actors' ages.

Sandra Bullock was great and the movie would not have been the same without her. If it HAD to be somebody else, my choice is always Amy Adams.

reply

So many people say Cameron Diaz. Please. She can't even act. I think Kate Winslet could have pulled off the character. But I really can't think of anyone else.

reply

Sandra Bullock was fine in the role, who cares about age difference--it happens all the time. Cameron Diaz would have ruined the film, Kate Winslet would have been wrong, as well as any other actress named Kate.

This movie was good just as it was.
