Bale is a distractingly bad actor

This has always bothered me: It takes an actor without any sense of subtlety whatsoever for people to sit back and say, "What a great actor." Throughout The Fighter, it felt as though Bale was winking to the camera, saying, "Look at me, everybody! I'm acting! Now where's my Oscar?" I was constantly taken out of the film because of Bale's distractingly self-conscious performance.

Good actors work with such subtlety that their performances go unnoticed, and, unfortunately, are often not recognized. Bale's performance in The Fighter is just the opposite: Loud, self-conscious, and totally distracting.

EDIT: This thread won't die, largely because the majority of people replying are misunderstanding my argument. For that reason, I'll reiterate the clarification I made earlier:

It's possible to play a loud character and do it right. For example, the character of Taketoki Washizu in Akira Kurosawa's Throne of Blood is one that requires a broad performance. Toshirô Mifune delivers just that in a way that keeps me engaged in the film from beginning to end.

By contrast to Mifune's performance, Christian Bale broadcasts the fact that he's acting in a way that takes me out of the movie. My problem isn't with the loud character--my problem is the way Bale performs the character in a manner that makes him seem like he is acting, thereby taking me out of the film, rather than seamlessly embodying the character as a good actor should.

I'm not proud to say, I've scanned through the majority of these 17 pages, and I'm almost entirely certain Volpix has created multiple accounts in order to 'agree with himself'

I almost feel sorry for the poor kid

I agree with the OP. Lots of actors win Oscars and there's a *beep* load of politics behind the scenes of winning an Oscar so it is NOT a seal of proof that a performance was great.

I think the OP has a point and that playing a over the top load mouth crackhead is deemed great acting and a subtle performance is overlooked. Being loud for an actor at his level is not a stretch. And especially Bale. There are many movies were unknown actors have hit the nail on the head portraying meth heads and addicts. An example of a subtle yet brilliant performance is Heath Ledger's in Brokeback Mountain. In this movie I actually thought Walhberg was more full of depth, complex and layered.

Zachary Quinto is ridiculously sexy! Robert Downey Jr....is pure sex!

Wow. If you couldn't see how naturally he played Dicky.. don't know what to tell ya, my friend!

reply

look vulpix, you simply described the kinda character he was playing, he was playing a loud, self-conscious crack head who had cameras around him throughout the whole movie so, he was basically "winking to the camera".

he was great in this film, period.

In another era, I might have agreed with you, but in the last 20 years, I unfortunately have seen too many real people whose drug addiction causes them act exactly like Bale's characterization.

you have a mental block, i know many intelligent cinefiles that stand defiant even when there is a great performance/vehicle right under their nose...Christian Bale is not my favorite actor, but he was truly terrific in The Fighter

reply

Funny. He actually comes across exactly like the real dicky actually behaves.

Since he's playing a loud crack addict who steals the lime-light from his brother at every occasion and is so ego-centric that it all has to relate back to him, of course he's going to be loud and relentless in his camera time. That's the entire purpose of the character. Dicky Eklund stole the light from Micky Ward just like Bale does to Wahlberg who is also brilliant. It's not obvious he's acting at all because you're fully immersed in the character and he is that character. Christian Bale is one of the best living actors at the moment. His role as Dicky Eklund is one of his best because he plays it perfectly.

Rather than replying to every comment I've received in the past few months calling me a "troll," a "retard," and even a person who "created multiple accounts in order to agree with himself" (?!), I'll rephrase my original argument because clearly I didn't explain it well enough.

My problem isn't with the loud character--my problem is the way Bale performs the character in a manner that makes him seem like he is acting, thereby taking me out of the film, rather than seamlessly embodying the character as a good actor should. That is all. Now if only I had phrased it that way to begin with.

Vulpix,
You know I'm usually easily distracted by an actor/actress who is indicating, but I really didn't see Bale doing it.

reply

vulpix, I agree with you. Glad I'm not the only one thinking it. I was just watching the film and don't feel like continuing. I watched like 10 minutes or so but I'm done with it. Part of it is because of Bale's performance. It's a little too obvious he's acting and trying his best to impress everybody instead of focusing on being the character.

reply

Then please in all your infinite acting wisdom explain how you would have him act out a real life crack head who played up for the cameras.

reply

Throughout the film a movie is being made about his life and his addiction, thus the character is being self conscious and playing to the in-story documentary camera.

I thought Bale did a good job.
