Bale is a distractingly bad actor

This has always bothered me: It takes an actor without any sense of subtlety whatsoever for people to sit back and say, "What a great actor." Throughout The Fighter, it felt as though Bale was winking to the camera, saying, "Look at me, everybody! I'm acting! Now where's my Oscar?" I was constantly taken out of the film because of Bale's distractingly self-conscious performance.

Good actors work with such subtlety that their performances go unnoticed, and, unfortunately, are often not recognized. Bale's performance in The Fighter is just the opposite: Loud, self-conscious, and totally distracting.

EDIT: This thread won't die, largely because the majority of people replying are misunderstanding my argument. For that reason, I'll reiterate the clarification I made earlier:

It's possible to play a loud character and do it right. For example, the character of Taketoki Washizu in Akira Kurosawa's Throne of Blood is one that requires a broad performance. Toshirô Mifune delivers just that in a way that keeps me engaged in the film from beginning to end.

By contrast to Mifune's performance, Christian Bale broadcasts the fact that he's acting in a way that takes me out of the movie. My problem isn't with the loud character--my problem is the way Bale performs the character in a manner that makes him seem like he is acting, thereby taking me out of the film, rather than seamlessly embodying the character as a good actor should.

I am certain that there were be a lot of replies regarding the review I just posted about this turkey and one of my remarks was about Bale........
He frankly looked like he had resurrected his character in The Machinist
The entire film was tiring to me and using waders to get through the foulness
of the language did not help either.

I highly recommend you watch the 'Extra Features' on the DVD release. You will see the real Dicky Ecklund and his character in real life, trust me, then you will see how good of an actor Bale was in The Fighter. As soon as I saw him I realized how brilliantly Bale had mastered his personality. And I am sure that if Dicky Ecklund himself along with his family didn't have a problem with Bale's performance and the fact that they were with him throughout the whole shoot making sure that he is not portrayed in a wrong way, with Bale having to make sure of his every move since he is portraying a real life character, then who are you to talk of his performance. seriously.

This is the main objection I have to the internet. It gives every self-absorbed pinhead a voice.

Are you just a big fan of Asian movies and that's why you don't like Bale?

Without knowing anything about his role or synopsis of the movie, my first thought when the movie starts with Christian Bale was " he looks like a drug addict". I immediately felt that he had invested a lot in that role. The real character (Dicky) is obnoxious, loud and hyper. I liked Bale's performance. I have met people like Dicky and his mom (Alice)

I am not American, but my husband is and he said that people from Massachusetts are very loud too. Haven't you met people that really fit stereotypes? Anyway, we like a movie or not because what makes us feel and this one got my attention from beginning to end. The feeling among the actors, the soul they put into it, was enough for me. That is the only thing that matters, at least for me.

The critics say..., the people say..., but the good performances are there. There is some abstract emotional factor that art conveys beyond technical terms and this is what did it for me.

In a nutshell, crackheads and many others strung out on various types of drugs tend not to act very subtly in real life, even when not using. Therefore, for Bale to have acted in a subtle manner would've been totally inauthentic to the character he was portraying.

Perhaps the OP's issue with Bale's performance in "The Fighter" is more a reflection of the OP's discomfort with being around addicts rather than a valid critique of Bale's performance in this film. Nothing wrong with that. I can tell you from personal experience that addicts aren't the easiest sorts to get along with socially if one is not a fellow addict.
