Anti-catholic? (NO TROLLS PLEASE!)

Hi there,

just read a quick article about this on io9, and not having ever read the original manga on which it is based (from what I hear, they took more than a few liberties with the plot....) I was wondering if anyone could tell me if this movie is supposed to be anti-Catholic, which is something I'd rather avoid. Movie tix are pricey where I live, so to be forewarned is to be forearmed, or words to that effect...

I'm not a troll, just a guy looking for a little clarification. Anyone with an ax to grind about religion please avoid this thread.

[Anti-catholic? (NO TROLLS PLEASE!)]

I don’t really see the religion portrayed as Catholic. Rather it is more like a stylised version of structured Western religion that one often sees in anime and magna. Although the pageantry looks familiar the substance is a muddled fiction.

Could a Catholic become offended by that? Sure. But I think it requires a bit of work. For one thing we’re talking about a complete alternate reality in which “vampires” and humans have waged war since the beginning. In other words, the whole thing is a fantasy.

The cross on the forehead is so subliminal for Ash Wednesday

hey!
i just saw it and i am VERY open to all beliefs but i gotta say;
this story is NOT against a spiritual belief.
it has alot of symbolism in it..

once u watch it, you'll really see its taking those that have a position of power and control "USING" religion to maintain control..

Just becuase you don't Liston to the people running the church, doesn't mean you cant do whats right in the name of god...
he goes against the orders of an organization, but does it in the name of his true calling which is to be the fighter for good...

its a pretty great Sci-Fi flick that takes a diffrent turn at vampires and uses old west-meets-futuristic-anime theme!

The priest sacrificed (and they all continue to do so) for god.. he just goes against the "higher-ups" because they refuse to acknowledge him.. even though he had done so much for them and never did anything to make them feel he betray them

.. pretty cool flick.. i liked it! roller coaster ride!!
(hope that helped ^_^)

No, It questions the abuse of dogma, but it's not anti-Catholic.

This movie is not overtly anti-Catholic. A knowledgable Christian would easily see the movie as incoherent if it were attempting to teach the Faith or attack it seriously. An unknowledgeable person who expects to see the truth of the Church conveyed in a sic-fi film....can't really be helped or harmed here anymore than on the TV in your living room.

Personally, I found then movie to be a thrilling ride with a kick butt Priest who values and keeps his vow of celibacy - something largely attacked inside and outside the Church today. For myself, as a serious traditional Catholic, I found the movie to be allegorical to the post Vatican II Church wherein the existence of evil is often denied. This Priest provided the composite character akin to our Priest's who work tirelessly for our salvation while suffering attacks from inside and outside the modernist Church.

If you're a Catholic who considers every Bishop/Cardinal/Msgr as infallible and would therefore take some of them being portrayed as corrupt, as an anti-Catholic film...then you should save your money. However this point of view could just as easily be flipped around and made to look like an authentically pro-Catholic film - where the struggle against evil is real, be it subtle or overt; and our Priest's wrest our salvation.

Absurd.....this is an action film set in a desolute future and someone is worried it may be anti catholic!!!! Who cares? Its mindless entertainment and quite frankly the film couldn't portray the catholic church to be any worse than it actually is. Now if the film were to be bogged down by religion, then I would be annoyed.

How you doin Chief,

Ultimately the answer is YES, they are making the Church out to be this soulless evil empire which is therefore anti-Catholic. The days of Hollywood writing kindly about the Church or Catholicism is over, unfortunately. The only Exception is "The Exorcism of Emily Rose". Hollywood will write Kindly about basic Christianity but at the same time will subtly insult the Church and Catholicism.
If you look closely at these movies where the Church is referenced their are MANY Subliminal Anti Catholic Antics. Anyways the movie is still entertaining. Just don't let it influence you.

Does it really matter if it's anti-Catholic? It's a fictional movie. Open your mind up a bit.

Not arguing with you, My mind is open. Just not all people have Filters for what they take in

Heh is it only me that sees the resemblance between the posters here with their wittering on about how you shouldn't care cos they know religion is bunk and the people who come to your door with religious tracts telling you they know your religion is bunk?

Anyhoo next time you have a question like this ask somebody like me to post it, I would have just lied and said "oh hey my friend says this movie is anti Catholic, that's really really cool but is it true?" Then you would only have had to contend with the bible pounders and there are fewer of those here than their anti religious counterparts.

Already, I have found two pieces of rare beauty. I am most grateful.
