two scottish actors playing cowboys Hmmmm?

the truth is that I love both Liam and Pierce and I couldn't wait to see this. Overall it is a good movie(slightly disapointed with the ending)

but as much as I love Liam and Pierce..I still found it rather odd that hollywood cast two scottish actors in the role of cowboys? Is there a problem with American actors? I mean I think George Clooney would have been great in Pierce's role and Gene Hackman in Liam's role

what say you?

do you find it strange that they cast two scottish actors in a western?

Irishmen in the American West is not a stretch at all. In fact, many of the Union Soldiers in the Civil War (like Brosnan's character) were drafted into service right off the boat from Ireland.

reply

Yes, there were lots of Irish fighting in the Civil War on both sides, but considering that the Union draft in the Civil War conscripted less than a quarter million Soldiers, of which a very small percentage actually served (the majority bought out or paid someone else to serve for them), the comment about Irish being drafted right off the boat is incorrect. Some Irish may have chosen to serve right off the boat (either being paid to serve for someone else, or because they needed a job, or because they thought it was the right thing to do), but they weren't conscripted in that situation.

I love both Liam Neeson and Pierce Brosnan! Two of my favorite Irish actors!

I have to remind you both Liam and Pierce are Irish, born in the Republic of Ireland, so I would have to say you got it mixed up, just a bit. I guess it's no different than getting a canadian mixed up with an american, so i can understand.

reply

WHAT WHAT WHAT!!!!???? You Hoser! Why you got to put down Canada, eh?

And may I point out to everyone, you can't really blame the OP totally. I mean, every body, or at least a part of them, wants to be a proud Scot anyways.

Actually Ballymena, County Antrim is in the north not the Republic.

Also remember, Liam Neeson's character Carver was from Atlanta, and Brosnan fought under Mcclennan in antietam so he could have been a Virginian. Most of the people in the south are of Ulster Scot, irish, german heritage. The accents were very good! The thing that fascinates me is that all british actors seem to do southern accents real well. In honesty-they probably have a better 1860 era southern accent than myself, because there language patterns are older, and probably are less tainted than my own(I'm from the south).

and since ppl are crying for accuracy nobody ever mentions alot of freed slaves be came cowboys and ranch hands. but i guess its easy to forget since if ur not white gentile, u dont matter to "historians".

I watched it last night and found it very good.

Some people never go crazy. What truly horrible lives they must lead

reply

well America wouldnt be making westerns without Scottish, Irish and other races, as these were the original immigrants making your "cowboys". so yes i think it was a good idea.

I was thinking of some actors from Hollywood's Golden Age who might have filled the parts. Say John Wayne in his "Searchers" mode or Jimmy Stewart or Henry Fonda or James Cagney. They all played darker obsessed characters at some point and seem suitable for Liam's part.

But for Pierce's role, it gets harder. I start thinking off the wall casting such as Kirk Douglas or even Dean Martin.

reply

Well.. Irish are from Boston so they're American, like Dutch from Pennsylvania.

reply

They are both Irish

Carver is an English name, not an Irish one, so it's not likely that he was supposed to be of an Irish background.

But many US accents have a clear Irish influence, so it would be fair to assume that that influence was even stronger then than now, So it's entitrely possible that their American accents are indeed the most credible in the whole movie.
