16 year old, talking like a 30/40 year old.

I kind of enjoyed the film apart from Juno talking unlike any 16 year old I've ever seen. I think that by making Juno a real character the movie woud have been much more powerful. I cant understand why they made her a 16 year-old gag-spouting, care-free person. Thats a fantasy character.....

So how many of you arguing here that Juno isn't a typical teenager are also on the American Pie boards glorying in their "realism"?

It's a comedy, not a documentary.

I have to admit Juno does not talk like some of the kids her characters age I know. But I also know that kids today are aware of music and entertainment, movies etc from every era. Growing up in the 80s I loved 60s music. My favorite movies starred Gene Kelly and I knew show tunes from the 40s and 50s. Today there are numerous ways for youth to connect to times gone by (more than I ever had and yet I appreciated things from past decadeds anwyay) There is VH1, XM radio, TV land, tons of movie channels. There are websites, facebook pages, etc. Kids today can find out about anything from any era. My friend's 15 year old daughter loves my old black concert t shirts from the 80s.
I went to an Eagles concert a year or so back and there were people of all age groups there.

Juno obviously gets her quit wit from her Dad. I find her character very believable.

You need to start hanging out with smarter people.

Anton Chigurh is dead and Spider-Man 3 is superior in every way to Funny Games.

Even smart 16 year olds are not nearly as self-confident as Juno.

Not get into the discussion about other posters believing (or not) that Juno speaks like a 16 year old.

I am a teenager myself and know quite a few 16 year olds that have similar manners or speaking and interested topics as Juno. I think the point is that Juno is presented as wise beyond her years; I would say she talks like she's in her 20s, but not a 30/30 year old. Juno is slightly off beat with her peers and that's meant to draw the audience to her. Whilst it is clear to me that the majority of teenagers are not like Juno, neither are the majority of 30/40 year olds.

It's a movie for Chrissake!
It's meant to suspend disbelief, entertain and whisk you away in whimsy.
It's not some heavy-handed polemic.
Your comment indicates you've literally 'missed the plot.'

Personally, I think that a lot of sixteen year olds talk like this. I realize this is a movie, but Juno is obviously very educated which is why she talks the way she does. She has a sense of humor as well. While it may be odd, her jokes and gags are quite funny and contribute to the overall quality of the movie. I would also like to point out that the movie would not have been nearly as entertaining if she did not act like that. Maybe not all sixteen year olds talk and act like Juno, but I believe that many do. Juno's sense of sarcasm and dry humor shape her as a character and really makes the film interesting.

This is pretty much exactly how my friends and I spoke when we were 16. Maybe we weren't as self-confident, but the conversations, subject matter and style was pretty much the same. I was still a teenager when I first watched this film, and it was so refreshing to see a teen movie that had characters I could relate to and recognise. Not every 16 year old has a brain the size of a peanut and a vernacular to match

"I'm not good or real - I'm evil and imaginary!"

I have to disagree. I am 17 years old and Juno talks a lot like my peers. I think she was a very "real" person.
