You can go on about pushing the limits of taboo, exploring our perceived notions of tolerance or looking beyond the content of a joke to find its humour but the bottom line is that this film must be one of the worst ever made. It lowered my opinion of both comics (who seem to be narcissistic creeps) and Americans (who everyone hates anyway). I feel sorry for anyone unfortunate to have been seduced by the attractive cast (and attractive it is), spent money and taken more time out of their lives than was necessary to see this in the cinema. I urge anyone with a sense of humour to avoid it at all costs.
waffle - this is my beef with things like modern art and modern pop culture - it's not so much 'what is the value of the product', but rather 'what is the value of the creator'. So a cheap painted American flag at a garage sale is worthless... unless it was painted by Jasper Johns, then it's genius.
Likewise, I don't see how the personality or even intellegence of the director has anything to do with weather or not he made a good film. I know plenty of smart people that have produced worthless crap. Oh, but they're interesting to talk to at cocktail parties.
I have a feeling the director wasn't out to make the documentary version of Citizen Kane. Therefore, he can hardly be faulted for NOT doing so. And THAT, my friend (and I use the term loosely), is why the director matters in judging his film. If he HAD intended to make a great film, I'd be on your side (probably). This is just meant to be interesting entertainment for those who find it interesting and entertaining, and f^(k everyone else.
PopeJaimie, are you saying that because the director set out to make a crappy film and accomplished his goal that he deserves credit for that? I also don't understand what any of this has to do with the thread.
If you set out to make a decent turkey sandwich, and you do so, would it make sense for someone to say, "What a terrible Thanksgiving dinner!" It would be a completely senseless criticism.
As for what this has to do with the thread, I am too tired and not articulate enough to explain. Hopefully with a little thought you can figure it out.
PopeJaimie - reread the thread, my man, you have completely missed its flow. However, your point that The Aristocrats is likened unto a turkey is well taken.
I'm English and although I find the joke rather rather poor (although a few interpretations made me smile) I found the film quite interesting. The film, for me, is representative of the joke, it's excessivly disgusting and something of a joke against whoever is listening. I did get bored with the film itself, so maybe in a funny roundabout way the jokes on me.
I have to admit that after a bit I was getting shell-shocked by some of the details, but it was more or less similar to what I was expecting having read the summary '100 comedians tell the same extremely filthy joke'. What I couldn't stop laughing about was the 7 (seven) people who walked out of the small cinema (out of about 15 people). I kept imagining them going to the foyet and asking for their money back saying "not filthy enough"! But I did enjoy the film. There were elements of it which were really just about Performance, and that was fascinating. The mime was very good... I don't like to say I have an open mind, because my mind is probably as closed as anyone's, just in different ways. It is a matter of taste. I happen to like to see a damn good rant: to see a person venting the depths of invention and speaking with absolutely no checks or restraints. The release of bile - got to be a healthy thing. It interested me what someone said in the film though, that the way people tell the joke reveals a lot about their personality. I couldn't say to what extent this was true, but it's a thought. Certainly we are our own censors, and when you get the chance to see what you hide from yourself, you learn a lot.
cheese - What was shocking? Have you never heard those themes before? If they honestly wanted to shock this film would have been full of racial steriotypes. THAT would have been shocking. As it was, The Aristocrats was mostly boring, aside from just plain sucking of course.
omg i loved the sene with the mine... i laughed so hard... o man this was a great movie.. but then again i also love kevin smith so you guys probley hate him too peace out
I've just watched err, highlights, and don't really have much inclination to watch all of it any time soon. I did laugh during some excerpts of the credits, which is more than I can say I did during 90 mins of US 'sitcom' a few years back. I actually didn't notice they'd changed the series, the situation was so similar, and the level/topic of gag was so low.
Sorry, but being a Brit, which produced Python, Moore/Cook, Hancock, Gervais, Partridge etc when you compare that to the US which produced My Two Dads and saying the US is best because of that is a bit dumb. Besides, if it wasn't down to the French saving your ass back in the day, you'd still be under UK rule, or maybe just about to abolish slavery, which of course us Brits did long before you lot.
Oh and our Deputy Prime Minister only punches members of the public, not shoots them....
And if American factories didn't produce materials we LENT you during the early part of WW2 the UK would have lost to Germany in WW2. Not to meantion we beat you in two wars, including the war of 1812 when we didn't have French help, and we were a small backwards nation of farmers with muskets. Also who brought slavery to America, the British. The thing is our countries are allies, the best of allies actually so stop hating on America. Our culture is 95% the same as yours so most things you say about us are true about you.
Also you picked the best british comedy and then picked sub par american TV. We both produce alot of good entertainment, so lets all be glad we share a common language so we can trade laughs.
"Sorry, but being a Brit, which produced Python, Moore/Cook, Hancock, Gervais, Partridge etc when you compare that to the US which produced My Two Dads and saying the US is best because of that is a bit dumb."
Yeah, but we also produced "Squeaky" Joe Pasquales which gives us a bit of a handicap... And On the Buses. But our American cousins came up with Van Wilder Party Liaison so I guess we're even.
Had to drop my two cents worth here - I was struck by the posters that endlessly bitch about "They just tell the same joke OVER and OVER......."
Yet - As far as I can tell, most of those posters that used that line of argument would pat themselves on the back for watching two hours of pro-american entertainers do 50 different versions of the "Star Spangled Banner" and would defend to the death those entertainers right to interpet that masterpiece in nearly any style imaginable.
Except, of course, none of that dangerous Hendrix or Roseanne Barr stuff. Just a good clean WHOLESOME cram-it-down-your-throat-and-say-thank-you exercise in democracy.
Me I'm just grateful that the producers kept Tom Greene away from the set.........
snagglepuss62629. re your last post ???? - Most of the posters here that hate this film seem to be liberal and British.
What people hate about the repetitiveness of this film is that each comedian has the ability to make up a unique and clever version of the joke but they all essentially say the same things... over and over and over.
You say, "As far as I can tell" wtf? You know nothing about the people that pan this film. Nothing you said makes any sense, but especially your main point, which is essentially this: Those who did not like the repetitiveness of The Aristocrats WOULD like a film with similar repetitiveness.
Yes, Justinuk. Stop putting down this film and the people that like it. It makes me so mad when people disagree with me. And saying I'm not funny? Whatthe? That's going too far.... He's probably hiding behind the dictionary definition of the word 'hyperbole'. DIE DIE DIE!
man this bored gets more and more *beep* up each time i scroll down. Ive seen the film and found it terribly hilarious. You know why? because i have a sense of humour. Lighten up its a film about a JOKE!!!! Is the creator of this crappy board not aware that the doc is about a joke. You know not everyone finds ever joke funny. Come on do you find this joke funny?? "why did the chicken cross the road?? To get to the other side!!" Did that get your sides splittin??? the point here is that if you didnt find the joke funny then fine. But dont come onto here saying that we dont have a sense of humour and that we are some kind of robots. Oh and lastly dont bring in politics and countries when it has NOTHING to do with it.
hey, no offense "justin" but why don't you go choke on a fry-up. Nice cheap shot at Americans. most of the best films are American, you Do like films, correct? After all you are on a film website, an AMERICAN film website. As far as your taste for the movie goes, I have ceased to be interested. As far as your ignorant, seemingly rootless intolerance goes: good luck with that. Cheerio. See a dentist ugly.
its ok if u didn't like the movie but you don't have to bash the people who did like it. this movie is jst not for you. it is still an important and great art form
