How come it's usually females getting possessed?

How come guys can't share in any of this possession fun?

Rosemary's Baby, The Exorcist, The Grudge, The Exorcism of Emily Rose, The Devil Inside, The Innkeepers, The Unborn, ...and on and on and on.

Well I guess at least The Haunting in Connecticut was a guy….

I'm sure, with five pages of comments, that someone has mentioned Insidious, The Shining, and The Ring 2.

I don't wanna go through the tons of replies but, I suppose somebody must've mentioned Event Horizon as well.

The women are more vulnerable duh.

reply

Because they are simple minded creatures.

No one is possessed in Rosemary's Baby or The Grudge... and I don't remember any possession in The Innkeepers either.

That being said, there is a long tradition of young women having strange things happen to them shortly after puberty strikes. Not just in movies but in folklore. Maybe it's some warning about potential pregnancies... letting something 'get inside' of them.
Outside of that it's just the general cultural thing of seeing women as more vulnerable and likely to be in danger. The last several horror movies I've watched, though new, still had the same old 'final girl' thing going on... where all the other characters are dead except for the 'good girl' (though nowadays she often a bit tougher, just a bit though). I thought that trope would be long dead by now.

correct.

Nobody gets possessed in Rosemary's Baby.

they are weaker

Because young girls are universally perceived as sweet and innocent. Portraying girls as evil would have more shock value.

On the same note, I noticed some or most of the posssessed girls sport dark hair.
