a conspiracy of adults to corrupt children

For its entire duration I was watching this film with a big frown on my face. This film felt SO WRONG! It may be a testament to how decadent and perverted the American Way has become since the seventies, that it is thought artistic when a nine year old is preparing smack and helping someone shoot up, or place it in such overtly sexual and peadophilic situations. How can her folks let her be in a movie that she is not allowed to see until she is sixteen? Any parent who thinks about this for a moment would agree. Filmmakers shouldn't be allowed to drag someone of this age into this kind of horror, even if it is all fake and make believe, just for the satisfaction of their own egocentrical 'artistic' needs.
I thought I was a big Gilliam fan but obviously I am mistaken. It really is about time he retired, along with the rest of his generation of filmmakers.

I won`t refer strictly to this movie or to any in particular, but in a way, I share the feeling of discontent in what looks like ill treatment of children in the cinematographic business. I love harsh issues which reflect our society nowadays, but I cannot end to accept a child explicitly being shown in circumstances which require adult comprehension not to cause damage. It is never said in any of the making of of any of these movies which employ children how the children have been taken care of, how long they were working each day, which psicological support, if needed, was supplied, or how they dealt with sexual or agressive scenes not to expose the children to them. I mean, I still perfectly remember my childhood and I found difficult to understand some adult behaviour, even adult content which was easily found on cable during the afternoon in movies for every public, that weren`t rated. I also remember associating Cruela Devil to my mother for months just because she had reasonably told me off, so imagine if I had had to play the role of an abused child in hands of a cruel stepmother. I wonder If I wouldnt have used my lines in the movie to attack my real mother verbally whenever she corrected my behaviour. I think these children must have a mixture of emotions in their minds of things they haven`t even lived yet. You see, I give a damn about the bizarre content -or not- of any movie, sex, gore, brutality, etc, as long as it doesn`t damage any child´s mind. Dixi.

I think someone already pointed it out, but once more - a film is basically an illusion, meaning that things aren´t actually the way the viewer has been led to believe. If we see a child confronted with a scene that can be described as unsuitable or possibly psychologically harmful, it does not mean it actually looked like this in reality. You don´t need to really have the child and a potentially off-limits scene she/he is apparently witnessing, in the same place or at the same time - it all can be done separately, with reaction shots and all other sorts of cinematic wizardry. As for various rights that might apply to child actors, considering the working hours & the like, I guess a film making process is overseen by various child protection groups and it´s obvious the parents also keep a keen eye on the proceedings. Film making involves lots of crowd, it´s not like the directors do it alone in secrecy behind some suspicious seedy corners.

reply

Yes, children rights in film business is more and more protected. It is very difficult today, I believe, to expose them to any sort of illtreatment. It was much worse in the days of Macaulay Culcin and Drew Barrymore.

What I mean abot DF is, for instance, Hide and seek. She has spent her childhood pretending she is someone else and crying rivers all along, but time will tell, I suppose, when she is older and partying and getting in and out of rehab, like most I hear of, you will see my point. We just have to wait a little. About potential care for children, I should take your word for that, which is already contradictory: "They're only allowed to work a few hours a day. They're only allowed to work 4 and in some cases 5 days a week." And then "If the child is continuously acting they must also be schooled properly weather that is home schooled or in an institution" By "weather" I suppose you meant "whether", otherwise it doesn`t make sense. Also can you explain this, because I didnt get it: "by the way her parents cant take all her money. Those days are way way way gone." Thanks.

Did you ever for a single solitary moment consider the idea that people might actually be enebriated at one time or another while posting and thus incapable of sufficient judgement to guarantee correct spelling at all times?

reply

I`d rather consider "for a single solitary moment" that the autocorrection tool is available for everyone and that everyone has actually got "sufficient judgement" to check and -thus- "guarantee correct spelling at all times", so that we can understand what we read without taking extra time in reading backwards, to and fro, upside down to build an idea, and not feel so "incapable" of comprehension, but, hey, that`s me, with my revolutionary ideas.

Take it easy, man, I wasn´t like, you know, very serious exactly.

Plus, I am a big fan of correct spelling myself & in a habit of going back to re-edit my posts if a mistake has been discovered. And, to be honest, I tend to expect as much from others as well. Although, I still think that if there happens to be just one occasional spelling error in a post - as was the case with that "weather" - it´s a bit on the nitpicking side for my taste.

Cheers.

"Take it easy, man, I wasn´t like, you know, very serious exactly." Haha, I am of the female kind, and I wasn´t taking it too hard, I was just playing a little bit with your own words, just to be bothering, but never got offended or something like that. I also like your concepts and totally agree with you, but for the record, I spent some time wondering what the weather had to do with it, remembering the windy afternoons in the movie.
Cheers to you 2.

Is it really true that the director of the Exorcist screwed Linda Blair's head around 360 degrees and that is why she got few acting jobs after?
Great movie, bozo dretractors.

reply

Gheheheheh, typical.
I cant say much more then, if you dont like it, dont watch it.
You'd make a good inquisitor.
But just look at the mature way the kid plays the part and then tell me she doesnt do such a good job. What this film tells us is that there is a definite wrongness, not in this movie, but in the way we live our lifes today. Hollywood usually doesnt shun making the most terrible war and crime movies; withou any message but "look how tough and cool america is..." This one is so much more than just a "please the general public" movie, this one is art with a capital A. Not for narrowminded american hypocrites. Not entertainment; entertainment corrupts. the modern generation of filmmakers is a bunch of propganda spouting feelgooders on cocaine.

In Norway we have a good rating system for films. Those are "permitted for all", "7 years", "11 years", "15 years" and "18 years". But the 18 years rating is the only absolute rate. Which means you have to be 18 or more to be permitted to see it. The other rates are more considered guidelines, which means that you can be 3 years younger if you go with an adult.

Which is in my opinion a very good solution, because it makes it possible to consider a childs maturity in each case.

This is certainly not the first film to depict young children in a precarious and dangerous situtation. If you would condemn this film for doing that, what did you think of Jurassic Park, making entertainment out of children being chased by dinosaurs!

Or go see "Slumdog Millionaire" to see children put into morally decrepid situations.
