Why'd they cast Scarlet?

I mean, the whole movie all I could think was why not someone WITH A PERSONALITY to act opposite the always engaging Topher and the surprisingly real Dennis Quaid? Scarlet just seemed so emotionless and...blah the whole time...like she was bored. She took me out of the love story, which should have been a huge boost in the movie. I wished they'd cast someone else.

I see the views go both directions here.

Personally, I found Scarlet's performance so refreshing. This script aims for realism. It focused on genuine reactions to genuine life situations, and I think that is the reason why some people find her performance to be wooden and emotionless. In real life, people's reactions are much more toned down than what we see on a movie screen. The kind of passion you see on a movie screen is actually pretty rare to find, and it stands out when you do.

She was required to portray Alex in the manner you see on screen, and she did it brilliantly. She absorbed the character so much that I had to remind myself that it was Scarlet. She really made me believe that Alex is a real girl because she is so relatable. This was one of the best performances I've seen her do, and the fact that she wasn't overly sexualized in this script like so many of her other roles seriously helped sell the whole thing.

This movie wouldn't have worked as well as it has without her.

Agreed. I thought she was fantastic in the part of an overachieving student in both sports and academia, who has had little opportunity up to this time, but at the same time a yearning, to experience a close relationship with the right member of the opposite sex.

The 3 leads were all great, but Scarlett lit up the screen especially (as she was supposed to) as we see her relationship deepening with Carter and we understand how he becomes totally smitten with her.

I like this film but I just couldn't imagine any one else playing Alex, other than Scarlett. 🐭

You know.. I'm not a fan of Scarlett in the slightest because she does come as quite wooden as an actress.

But in this movie her character was quite bland. If she came across as emotionless it's be because the lack of personality her character had.

Alex stated this herself, that shw was too boring to write about.

I meant 'Come across'.

She was lifeless in this. Could be her character.

Agreed, and there was absolutely no spark between her and Topher. Their relationship came too suddenly and out of nowhere. She was blank-faced and growly monotone-speaking almost the entire movie.

I think she and Topher had great chemistry.

Why are the minute few numbskulls that have a vendetta against certain actresses disproportionately loud and obnoxious? I saw this movie and remember thinking it was fun, and never had any hint of any problem with SJ, so it just must be your mental illness ... go get it treated or at least shut up, or phrase your nonsense in some kind of inoffensive way. Nothing you say about her is true ... if you want to criticize something, have a criticism, a real criticism.

I know this a 18 year old thread but it's funny looking at this now considering Scarlet is one of best actresses out there when given the right material.

I liked her in this, the part didn't ask much from her. But Scarlett was at her hottest imo around this time, she was around 20 I think. She was on a roll of just churning out film after film after breakout with Lost in Translation like most acting talent does after a breakout role. In 2004 alone, she had like 6 films out. I think in her first 3 to 4 years post LIT success, she made nearly 20 films.

To be fair the film isn't really about Scarlett's character it's more a bromance between Dennis Quaid and Toper Grace. But Scarlett gives Alex a bit of warmth and likeability to the part.
