Why'd they cast Scarlet?

I mean, the whole movie all I could think was why not someone WITH A PERSONALITY to act opposite the always engaging Topher and the surprisingly real Dennis Quaid? Scarlet just seemed so emotionless and...blah the whole time...like she was bored. She took me out of the love story, which should have been a huge boost in the movie. I wished they'd cast someone else.

Yes, I thought the smae thing. Not a big Scarlett fan anyway, but still anyone else would have been better, in my opinion.

I'm on the opposite side: propably no other actress could've played Alex the way Scarlett Johansson did.
On the scene when she fights with her dad, and he says "I liked you better then (when you were five)", and she replies, "That'a a terrible thing to say", I thought that was one of the most human moments I've seen in a movie in years. She didn't scream, she didn't cry; she was just shocked that her father could be so mean to her. I think she played it the most unusual way; she didn't play it safe. On that moment, her character was barenaked, she was at her most vulnerable. And tears came rollin' down my face. That's a superb piece of acting, in my humble opinion.

Wow you actually liked her acting? When I turned the channel and saw her on it, I thought I was watching a movie about retards or autistic kids or something. She just sounded like her windpipes were loaded full of snot. And her acting range was disappointing.

yeah whats up with the manly voice of johansson? i think she is a beautiful actress, but does she always sound like that and why the hell did she sound like that?

I thought that she was okay but her voice really got on my nerves. but other than that, I don't really have any complaints.

I do agree. It would have been much more interesting if they had chosen a woman with another kind of personality. Scarlett is an excellent actress but she didn't convince me in this movie.

Lost In Translation and In Good Company. I think these two are her best roles. Now Ive yet to see her in Vicky Christina Barcelona. And I thought Match Point was a load of old..and I didnt think much of her performance in that. She's better when not deliberately playing sexy..she doesnt need to do that deliberately, she's already got a good strong screen presence. I applaud the director and person who cast her in this movie; she was the right person for the job. Her character is complex but quiet. Inside shes got all these emotions, all these things running through her mind, but outside she comes across as different, cool. I GOT her character. The movie wasnt a love story for me. I love love stories but kudos for what they did with this movie.

The problem with Neil Perry from Dead Poets Society is I would have stalked him like crazy.

Having fallen in 'love' with Scarlett after first seeing her in Horse Whisperer, and combined with subsequent roles such as A Love Song for Bobby Long, Lost in Translation, I feel this girl/lady is in top form in these earlier roles as her focus is on the acting, as opposed to fame, and the looks are plain. I've seen all her movies but 3, 3 minor roles.

Over the years she is steadfastly, becoming more of the Hollywood Red Carpet type. She is naturally beautiful in her natural state, it is what I loved about her. All the dollying up, makeup, does not behoove her, but actually detracts from her beauty. Take her current IMDB main picture, you can't really even see Scarlett under the makeup and fashion. She is nearly perfect to me in her imperfect state, not when she goes for the modern Hollywood/fashion beauty. If she feels external pressure to do this with her looks, I suggest, in her case, casting that aside and being herself.

Equally the quality of her acting is on a slide since Lost in Translation, with the roles becoming increasingly shallow. In Love Song for Bobby Long, she amazes me in various scenes such as when she confronts Travolta in the little house, what emotion from one so young. I don't believe that was driven by the Director, but came from the young Scarlett, striving to act.

But what do I know? The professionals have her now. Her PR agent certainly knows what he's doing. The money is probably good, and that's what is important.

I miss her. I believe we are losing what was the most promising young actress ten years ago, to Hollywood money-making mediocrity. It is not what was meant to be, Redford knows it also. She should have a long talk with Streep.

I agree with the OP.
Next to all these real, great actors, she took me out of the movie everytime she was in a scene...total lack of personality - I don't know why I don't like her, never have (and I've seen her in at least 5 films). I wish I could, but to me she's just annoying, boring as hell and just there cause some guys go gaga over the lips, the hair and the boobs...sorry, but that's the way I see it. I'm sure she's a nice and funny person in real life, but I would be happy never to see her in any film again. Only if she learned to use her facial muscles, and learn to walk like a normal person...lol

She just seemed bored in the film. No emotion or expression.

I absolutely adore Scarlett and will watch anything with her in it. Her subtle emotions and mannerisms in her acting not everyone appreciates but she has a realness that few other actresses do. This wasn't her best film but was still good. The character wasn't meant to be overly dramatic or intense. I will be honest and admit maybe I'm enchanted too much by her beauty, but I also think she's an excellent actress. I think having watched like 20 of her films gives me an informed opinion.
