Criminally Underrated

This film is insanely underrated. I remember back when it was released it was chucked up as a mixed bag at best.

This movie has better dialogue and character development than 95-99% of the movies released in the last decade. Pitt, Bana, Bean, Cox, and Gleeson have solid performances that add depth and bring humanity to their characters.

It uses practical and CGI effects just as well as the praised Lord of the Rings films released around the same time frame. They successfully bring epic classical era battles to life that still hold up over 15 years later.

At the end of the day I can watch this movie and feel transported to another world similar to the feeling achieved from watching GOT. That in its self is catching lighting in a bottle with much less time to explore characters. It takes you to time and place that may or may not have happened and plays out like a story from a good teller.

I haven't seen it in quite a while now, but I do agree that it's a film that deserves more attention that its gotten over the years. It's a good epic film.

Bana in particular I thought gave a great performance, and speaking of underrated, he also deserves more credit than he's gotten as an actor. He was also quite good in Munich, Chopper and Hanna.

While it may not be perfect, Troy is certainly a very good film and a solid retelling of the Trojan War. If you have the itch for a Greek epic or sword-and-sandals picture, you could certainly do much worse. Why it's rotten on RT I have no idea.

reply

Not really a "solid retelling of the Trojan War". The real one lasted 10 years(!) while in the movie it seems only a few days.

reply

Really, you have to consider the art of movie-making.
It is very hard to make a movie feel like ten years and work as an interesting story at the same time.
Furthermore, "Troy" is hardly meant to follow "The Illiad" literally anyway.
So it makes sense if the war is much shorter in this version of the story.

reply

Maybe I should have instead said, "A solid movie that incorporates the story of the Trojan War into its plot."

reply

Actually, historians are not even sure the Trojan war happened. Most would agree if it did happen it was vastly different than what's recorded.

It's based on the Iliad of Homer which intertwined fiction, mythology, and actual events. What is true and not true in the Iliad can be debated. But ,it's fun to believe that these characters existed and the events truly transpired this way.

It's impossible to criticize a movie's historic inaccuracy on events that may not have even happened.

The director's cut in particular is I think a wholly satisfying story told very well indeed.

60% FRESH rating with TOP critics, 73% fresh audience score. It seems the overall critics score has been dragged down by low level wannabe "critics." Troy is one of the best movies of the past 20 years.

It had some cringe moments (“Achilles! Silenced by a girl”). And brad Pitt might’ve been the weakest part of the movie. But it’s an alright film

reply

What makes that line a cringe moment?

I agree.
