Was Anyone From Alabama Offended by this Movie???

Come on guys.. we have got to stand up for ourselves.. this movie is an insult to the people of Alabama.. Although I don't deny we do have the "redneck,,white trash, beat up truck driving, beer drinking, baby making "billy bob".. but it definately does not represent the MAJORITY of Alabama. We are very classy, & well educated; and we have not JUST recently discovered recliners! If you do not live in or have never visited our beautiful State .. Please do not judge Alabama by this movie. Granted the hospitality & manners were right on!

I have an aunt who is 58 years old and has lived in New York for 40 years ^^^ she recently moved to Alabama because when she visited every Thanksgiving/Christmas she fell in love with the people and State as a whole. Although she does make fun of our southern accent a little.. I tell her as Jake told Melanie . just because we talk slow doesn't mean we're dumb! ;-)

I dont think people from Alabama have nothing to worry about, the film showed Alabama as a lovely place. Dont be offended :)

reply

no, i know that. i live in minnesota and we've got white trash-y, small, hick towns too. minus the accent though. Also minus the hot southern Jake Perry charater, sadly. anyways, i think this is more about small town roots rather than JUST southern roots.

It's a little childish and stupid, but then, so is high school. - Ferris Bueller

My fiance is from Alabama and Sweet Home Alabama is one of his favorite movies! So no... it doesnt offend him... or most of his family (the family I know) for that part...

To me, it more portrays small towns in the midwest and not the actual state of Alabama. I am from a small town in Oklahoma, and every time I see this movie I am reminded of home. I don't think anyone should be offended, after all, it is "just a movie!"

reply

Well I'm born and raised in Alabama and it didn't offend me...
I found it a hilarious movie...

I am from SC and I found the movie funny, cute and well played out. It's good to laugh at yourself and have a joke at your own expense - and that's what this movie was. I mean honestly folks, this is a romantic comedy, not a documentary. I really don't think anyone actually watched this movie and said - holy cow they're a bunch of ignorant rednecks down there!!!!!!!! If they did, then they were probably just an ignorant redneck (newsflash, you can be an ignorant redneck from any region in the world).

SO have a laugh at yourself and the world you live in, then you can go back to be pretentious if you want. I was actually surprised they had a southern born actress, Reese Witherspoon, play a girl from the south. Normally they get Sandra Bullock or something to play a sappy role like this and have her give an ear splitting fake accent a work out for the whole movie. If you want to be p1ssed at Hollywood, there's something you can get fired up. Bad accents done by taletless actors.

Why get upset? It's just a state. I live in Indiana, and when people say things like "There's nothing but corn in Indiana", I just say "Yep" Because even if what they are saying is somewhat false, who cares? It's just a state, aka: a body of land with a name. Whoo-hoo! Thats really something to take offence over.

And for anyone who wants to know, Indiana is mainly corn, and unless you want a boring quiet area to live, where people think trains are the way of the future, I wouldn't recomend living here.

I think SHA did make Alabama look like it's still in the late 1800's. Which is completely off-based. Nice people and nice towns. BUT MAN, Alabamans are THE WORST DRIVERS in the world. No respect for anyone or anything on the road-It's unbelievable but true, just drive through it once and you will understand.

i live on the southern tip of alabama and i'm not offended whatsoever. i love little towns like the one in the movie.

I am from Kansas, and as an earlier poster pointed out, many people in NY think we still have Indian attacks here. I also have a close friend who lives in Alabama, and she loves this movie.

I have a different take on things. I think Alabama came off looking very good in this movie. There were certainly some goofy people portrayed, but who doesn't have a goof ball or two fall out if we shake our family tree? Even the people portrayed as odd came off as good, decent and genuine people in the end. Just because some people may lack in sophistication doesn't mean they lack in intelligence, compassion and decency.

Best Wishes,

Well no disrespect to Americans but you guys generally are unaware of everything other than your own lives. Few years back i was shocked to read in a chat room where an American asked me if we have computers in Pakistan???? That was so lame and i got pretty pissed off at that....

lol contactammar!

im from london and if anything this movie made me want to go to alabama, it came across as a warm friendly place and im obsessed with anything southern anyway, love southern films and the accents. Id love to do a roadtrip around the states settling somewhere like alabama, londons great, but it would be nice to live in a warm, neighbourhood where everyone knows one another and i think SHA showed that. rednecks exist everywhere even in london except over here we call them chavs! Its important to have a sense of humour though and be able to take the piss out of yourself.

I live in Alabama - and I think the movie made us look good! ... probably better than we deserve... ha! People are the same everywhere... I've travelled all over the USA and some abroad and I'm always amazed at how much people from different regions/cultures are more alike than different. I was recently in New York City for the first time in many years and I was shocked at how NICE everyone was... even the cab drivers! :0)

I lived in a small town in Wisconsin...there are the same stereotypes there. I wouldn't take offense to it. It's just like any small town in the U.S. Everybody knows everybody and because of that there are a lot of characters. You just know everybody better than living in a big city. It's great being from a small town.

I saw this movie about a year ago and do not remember that it disparaged Alabama particularly.
