Was Anyone From Alabama Offended by this Movie???

Come on guys.. we have got to stand up for ourselves.. this movie is an insult to the people of Alabama.. Although I don't deny we do have the "redneck,,white trash, beat up truck driving, beer drinking, baby making "billy bob".. but it definately does not represent the MAJORITY of Alabama. We are very classy, & well educated; and we have not JUST recently discovered recliners! If you do not live in or have never visited our beautiful State .. Please do not judge Alabama by this movie. Granted the hospitality & manners were right on!

I have an aunt who is 58 years old and has lived in New York for 40 years ^^^ she recently moved to Alabama because when she visited every Thanksgiving/Christmas she fell in love with the people and State as a whole. Although she does make fun of our southern accent a little.. I tell her as Jake told Melanie . just because we talk slow doesn't mean we're dumb! ;-)

Haha. Maybe you should sit back and lighten up. It's a movie, a fictional movie, and not a supposed portrayal of Alabama or its people.

You don't have to take this movie so seriously. I'm from the south and found nothing offensive about it. Get a grip on reality and take this movie from it's entertainment value.

there are backwards country towns like that in all lot of states, not just the south, there are tons of them in upstate new york, i think the movie was made to represent those small towns not the entire state, tho i do see how it can lead viewers to believe that everyone in albama is dumb and that new yorkers are sophisticated, trust me, i'm from NY and there are a lot of really dumb people here, only difference is that in albama they're called rednecks and here they're called hayseeds

also there are more than a handful of new york stereotypes, everyone thinks we're all *beep* and have a thick brooklyn accent, i've also encountered many people who think that all new york is is just new york city (not to mention some of the gross misrepresentations of NYC in a lot of movies) but NYC is just a very small part of new york, i constatntly have to explain to people that the majority of NY is not city like and that we also have some very beautiful landscapes (great rivers, lakes, mountains, and forests) hell the champlain valley area has been described by some as one of the most beautiful landscapes in the world, yet still a lot of people think all new yorkers are city dwellers, even in this movie all thats portrayed of new york is a stuck up snobbish view of high class city people, its all crap, just like its all crap to think that all alabama has is ass backwards rednecks

my god, yes. i'm from syracuse, which is central new york. and everytime i tell someone who's not from NY that im from NY, they always ask which part of the city i'm from!!! my god, look at a map! there is an entire state above that friggin city. and upstate ny is beautiful. i hate nyc.

I lived in New Jersey for quite a while so I sympathize with you. Almost EVERY television show (Family Guy, The Simpsons, Sex and the City, heck even The Golden Girls) makes fun of New Jersey as being an ugly and dirty state. That's despite the fact that we are one of the wealthiest states in the country and the fact that the state is actually quite pretty.

oh shut up people its just a movie...my gosh...

''Spiderman Is The Coolest''

I get it in a different way. I am from Hawaii and when I moved to Nevada I was plain stupid questions like, "Have you ever seen a volcano erupt close up?", "Is your house on water, and the best "Did you drive here"...

Ignorance is everywhere.

I'm from N. GA and wish people would base thier opinions of us on movies like this, so they'll stay away. I would love for life to be still like it is in this film, but big city folks move to my town because they want to be in the "country". Then they bring in all thier big city conveniences and cause towns to grow to where natives don't fit in.

Being from Auburn, Alabama and a recent graduate from the university it took my mother all of 4 years to come and visit me here. She lives in Brooklyn and was under the immpression that this city doesn't have basic things like electricity and running water. (Granted it doesn't help that I buy bottled water like its the end of the world, if you live here you understand.) And OMG She just about bought out the store when I took her to Wal-Mart for the first time, she bought all the gifts for the family from Wal-mart... family can be amazing.

this is a sweet but lightweight movie. anybody with sense isn't going to think alabama or any part of the south is exactly as portrayed. from another perspective, don't stereotype people from bigger cities as stupid enough to think everyone in small towns is a hick. we know better. don't let the stupid people who ask about indoor plumbing and such give you the impression that all of us in big cities are stupid. there are stupid, hickish people everywhere -- in small towns and big cities. small towns have their charms, just like big cities have their appeal. but every place has drawbacks.

I'm not even from Alabama and I was insulted by this movie. Not just because I'm a southerner but on top of all the red neck sterotypes this movie was terrible. What a waste of talent. Mary Kay Place, Candice Bergen, Jean Smart, and Reece Witherspoon all wasted in this sad little movie we've all seen before in one or another form. By the end I already knew I had wasted two hours but when she punched Candice Bergen for insulting her "mama" I also felt shame. Shame that I got sucked into watching this awful movie by a pretty face.

i dont think it was representing alabama. it was just representing a town in alabama. and i mean, every state has a town like that.

I'm sorry to hear that some were offended. I never had any negative thoughts about the state of Alabama while watching this movie. If anything, I thought the movie portrayed those in Alabama showing more heart and care towards each other.
