Was Anyone From Alabama Offended by this Movie???

Come on guys.. we have got to stand up for ourselves.. this movie is an insult to the people of Alabama.. Although I don't deny we do have the "redneck,,white trash, beat up truck driving, beer drinking, baby making "billy bob".. but it definately does not represent the MAJORITY of Alabama. We are very classy, & well educated; and we have not JUST recently discovered recliners! If you do not live in or have never visited our beautiful State .. Please do not judge Alabama by this movie. Granted the hospitality & manners were right on!

I have an aunt who is 58 years old and has lived in New York for 40 years ^^^ she recently moved to Alabama because when she visited every Thanksgiving/Christmas she fell in love with the people and State as a whole. Although she does make fun of our southern accent a little.. I tell her as Jake told Melanie . just because we talk slow doesn't mean we're dumb! ;-)

Yeah it is disappointing, but stereotypes are often inevitable no matter what kind of movie you make. California is constantly being written as a big hunk of sunshine filled with bleached blond beach bums (never underestimate the power of alliteration) and having lived in CA my entire life, I find it very hard to watch television shows like the OC or 90210 without bursting into ridiculed laughter.

Alabama was a great movie, and for the most part people should be able to tell fact from stereotype.

I most defenitely know that alabama is not exactly the way it was portrayed in this movie, and i know that the south is a very warm and friendly place. (my dad lives in kentucky) and yes i have also heard many stereotypes about the south that i found ridiculous. However, if they would have portrayed the people from New York City and the people from Alabama as basically the same type of people than what would have been the point? Both places reflect part of who melanie is so they couldn't have been the same, or else it wouldn't have mattered where she was. They had to portray Alabama and new york as two polar opposites to get the point across that alabama is where she belonged.

I'm sure it was not their intention at all to make people from Alabama all look like redneck hicks, because unless the people working on this movie are completely thick, then they know that southerners are not like that.

And a side note, i'm from michigan and we find just as much offense in being called yankees and you guys find in being called hicks. It's not like you're a minority, the people from new york portrayed in this movie isn't exactly true either, not all of us are arrogant socialites. I live in a tiny town in michigan about the size of the, i am guessing, fictional town in this movie. If i went to new york city i'm sure i would be blown away. Plus i have heard many people refer to the people in my town as rednecks. So don't think you're the only ones that could be offended from this movie.

I don't think that there is anybody out there thats going to watch this movie and think that every place in Alabama is like it. Like someone said in the first post, most of alabam don't live like that. But this movie is not a doct. on most of the state. So while I'm I understand why it could offened people from that state a little, I don't think the movie writers ment to offened anyone, and that most people not from Alabama probabley won't get what you mean when you say your offened by this movie. The way I see there are a lot of people in this world that are arrogant when it comes to knowing and understanding what every place in the world is like and where they are located. And if every one go get upset when people said the littlest offence-of(no clue how to spell that word sorry) thing then there would be a lot of mad people in this world. Like the person that posted above me pointed out, a lot of people could get offened by this movie. I'm sure that Alabama is a great state, as with every other.

I'm from southern Missouri and we get called rednecks and hicks all of the time. It's annoying. Million Dollar Baby didn't help us out at all either!
When I watched this movie I knew that they were just over exsaggerating the southern stereotypes that a lot of people seem to have.

I live in a small village in Canada, and it's the same thing. I get asked by Americans if I live in an igloo. To which I reply 'Of course I do! And next week we're voting to see who will run our iceburg; the polar bear or the seal.'. It's not my fault they're dumb.

I loved the movie Sweet Home Alabama (I'm watching it right now), and am not quite gullible enough to think that all of Alabama is like that. Granted I'm sure there are SOME places like it; as there are anywhere.

This reminds me of the Canadian stereotypes I live with: That we all live in igloos, go ice fishing, are lumberjacks or married to one, own pet beavers, have sled dogs and live in the great white north....oh, and we pronouce "About" "a-boot". NO I DO NOT!!!

A person with numerous degrees and quite a few typos. I wasn't offended at the movie. I am more offended at the fact that you like to brag.

reply

I am from Alabama and I was not offended. They actually filmed a small part here in my hometown; it's where Melanie is looking at all the mansions and it has a 'Welcome to Greenville' sign right before she goes to Pigeon Creek.

Big Fish didn't portray us bad at all. My cousin was also an extra, and my friend Hailey Anne played the younger version of Jenny. Big Fish and Sweet Home Alabama both did really well with the small towns.

reply

You were offended by this movie because you're from Alabama? Try being from the Philippines, a third world country. There was this one comment from AFV that said, "The next time you hire a nanny from a third world country, make sure she knows what a toilet is." Or something like that. Those aren't the exact words, but you get the gist of it. Most people think we don't have even have cement.

reply

You people make me laugh what with all your being offended and such. It's kinda of like...who cares?

reply

OK, I'm from Minnesota and I've NEVER heard anyone speak like the people in the movie Fargo. Do you hear me having a fit over it? Why do people have to pick apart everything in every movie?? If y'all can't just relax and enjoy watching a movie..try doing something else!

reply

Would this really be an insult to you?
I don't want to sound ignorant because Im not from the south but, it made me think better of the south.
I mean ok so I've been to Indiana and Tennessee while both have beautiful places in them and people who can talk with pretty good grammer.
Now I go to Tennessee one or twice a year and, theres been a whole lot of people who talk so bad and slow I have to ask if they can please repeat what they say(which makes me feel like crap I feel as though that might make me sound rude).
I think though if anything though this would show people from the south in a good light.

reply

Thats kind of stupid.I'm not from Alabama, but I live in Georgia.I have family that live there.Yeah,we have accents, but so does everyone else.I try not to talk as bad as most people down here do.I actually live about 45 minutes from where they filmed the part where Bobby Ray and Melanie were in the Carmichel plantation. It's Berry College and that place is amazing.
Yeah, most people here are redneck hicks, but they're pretty nice people.

reply

i dont see why yall are offended, i mean, im from texas and in every tv show or movie i have ever seen that has someone from texas in it(in the movie, not the actor)or visited texas they are wearin cowboy hats, jeans, plad button up shirts, and cowboy boots and say thats how everyone is. i know thats not true cause i live here, but its fun you know, when you think of texas you do think of cowboys, so im fine with that, ill just laugh about it. and im sure its the same way with alabama

Heh, only ignorant people will believe the stereotypes. I have a Scottish friend, and she went on holiday to Florida only to be asked 'Do they have cars in Scotland?'. Well, duh!

There's only a few things that are PLAYED FOR LAUGHS, that I would think people would get mad about it. The rest is just cultural differences that were used also for comedic purposes. But other than a few things I don't see any reason to say we're not like this, as if it's a bad thing, unless you sre some kind of aplogists. Most of the stuff in the movies is stuff that people in the south value for example: a strong sense of comminity. So even if it didn't 100% reflect life, it did reflect what people wish life was like.

reply

Personally, although I am not from Alabama, seeing this movie made me want to visit it more. It really looked beautiful, I don't see that you sould be so offended by it, I just thought it made it seem like the perfect town. The place I wish I lived, with neighbours and lakes and kids and romance and walmart and highschool.

reply

im not from america, but from wales (uk) and it makes really wanna visit alabama. it look beautiful!

and that fact is she stayed in alabama over new york sayin its better

reply

Yeah I'm from Australia and it made me want to visit too

I've never been further south than Virginia in my life, but one of my best friends is from Kansas, and despite living in one of those 'hick towns' and having a very pronounced accent, she's one of the most intelligent people I know. My parents are from Russia and Ireland, respectively, so I get asked more often than I'd like whether my family gatherings consist of bad tempers and alcohol. Every region in the world has their stereotypes, unfortunately; and the people who take every stereotype at face value, in my opinion, are people whose opinions are not worth getting offended over. They're only revealing their own ignorance in displaying a blatant lack of understanding.
