Was Anyone From Alabama Offended by this Movie???

Come on guys.. we have got to stand up for ourselves.. this movie is an insult to the people of Alabama.. Although I don't deny we do have the "redneck,,white trash, beat up truck driving, beer drinking, baby making "billy bob".. but it definately does not represent the MAJORITY of Alabama. We are very classy, & well educated; and we have not JUST recently discovered recliners! If you do not live in or have never visited our beautiful State .. Please do not judge Alabama by this movie. Granted the hospitality & manners were right on!

I have an aunt who is 58 years old and has lived in New York for 40 years ^^^ she recently moved to Alabama because when she visited every Thanksgiving/Christmas she fell in love with the people and State as a whole. Although she does make fun of our southern accent a little.. I tell her as Jake told Melanie . just because we talk slow doesn't mean we're dumb! ;-)

How do you think we West Virginians feel?

I'm sorry, but this is kind of ridiculous. Do you really think everyone else is dumb enough to believe that a movie like this would be something good to base their entire opinion of Alabama? There are people like that everywhere. I personally have never been to Alabama or any of the southern states really, but my opinions of those places don't come from movies and things like that. As far as I know, most people are the same way.

ok....just to let you know...in the movie, as reese drives to alabama, she drives through the nice part and into the trashier part of alabama. Everywhere has places that are like that. And the movie doesnt represent "the majority of alabama" as you said....just the people in that one part. So how it is an insult to you if they focus on the "redneck,,white trash, beat up truck driving, beer drinking, baby making "billy bob" people that you said do exist in alabama meanwhile not saying anything bad about the other parts of alabama?

and im from texas and some people assume that we all ride horses to school and we are all cowboys. haha i think its funny.

I personally think that some of you are taking this a bit out of proportion. There's no reason to get all huffy and puffy just because your state wasn't portrayed honestly or correctly in this film. Really, what state IS portrayed correctly in movies? Ever thought that all American's are stereotyped by (at least some) foreign countries? I honestly think that everyone just needs to chill and realize that everyone in movies are formed from the stereotypical opinion of the majority of others. I mean, Americans aren't the only one's who are stereotyped! Think about what the majority of American's (or at least the people I've come across) think about the French. THe stereotypical French person (according to the average American) is obnoxious and rude and thought to hate Americans. Yes, some of the opinion has to do with the media saying really off things. Having lived around them for 3 years, I have to say that they, generally, aren't like that! Everyone just needs to understand that movies are meant to entertain (not made to intentionally offend people) and characters in movies are nearly always based off stereotypes. If I got as offended with all the movies (set in or about) California as you are getting about the characters in Sweet Home Alabama, I would go insane! Do you honestly think that we Californians say "dude" and "what up dawg?" all the time (as portrayed in movies)? Of course not! Ultimately, it's JUST A MOVIE. No need for people to get really offended. It's not like most people actually believe any of it anyway... You know the stereotype isn't true so try to laugh at it, instead of getting immediately offended.

Don't be offended folks. I'm from Australia and honestly, people from overseas know it's just a movie taking artistic license. And I would've thought the same would be true of North Americans.

But I understand exactly where you're coming from - Aussies have been charactured in movies for so long the 'cultural cringe' just comes naturally these days.

Cheer up, it's only a movie

people, it's just a movie for god's sake!
granted i'm not from the south of the US, but from northern England, which over here in the UK is equivalent to it. everything is usually filmed in London, and the north is ALWAYS portrayed as grim, heavily industrialised, rainy and just depressing in general, even though it's not.
Films like 'The Full Monty' and 'East Is East' are full of northern british stereotypes, but why be offended?
And in S.H.A., aren't the residents of Alabama, in the end, portrayed as the better people? and that's the message of the film - be proud of your roots and don't deny them. it's saying that the South isn't as bad as every New Yorker or Californian makes out. so rather than criticise the film, embrace it.
and the film isn't portraying the PEOPLE of the south as backwards, just the IDEALS, as you can't deny that the area in general is more racist and homophobic than the rest of the USA (see opinion polls etc.) When attitudes change, so will the world's opinion. Now that's not having a dig at any of you, as from what i've read i get the impression that you all are articulate and intelligent, just at specific institutions that still seem to be prevalent in the south.

Hey tom_sto86, I loved the Full Monty, but you are right, The Full Monty and The Crying Game make it seems like the U.K. is all grey skies and fog. I suggest people see The Theory of Flight. It shows the country in a beautiful light with loads of sun shine(yes, there is son in London!)

Stereotypes can be funny and help the movie(Raising Arizona)or sometimes people can get offended. I say enjoy the film for what it is and don't take it too seriously.

oh get over yourself. they weren't saying everyone from alabama is a redneck. they were simply displaying the contrasts between melanie's past and present lives. she went from being a nobody, living in a tiny house to being a huge fashion designer in new york and engaged to the mayor's son. the movie was not insulting people from alabama.

I wasn't offened in any way by the movie. I knew people like the ones represented in the movie. Just like everywhere else, Alabamians come in all flavors.

I grew up in the real Greenville AL and was bit disappointed that the producers of the movie didn't use the actual Greenville. There are many beautiful homes there and the courhouse is a unique structure, sitting in the middle of the street. Pigeon Creek really exists also, but it is nothing more than a wide spot in the road out in the boondocks and not an actual town.

I was talking to someone on my vacation in cali and was at disney land and i was in line just haveing a convo with some people in line and when i told them where i was from thay had this shocked look on there face. And said arn't you scard liveing in oklahoma With all those indian attacks and trying to scalp people and all those indians rideing horses. I was like what the hell are you talking about and they said well we see all those western type movies. At first i thought they were jokeing with me but they were like from alstralia (SP)or somthing and i guess they just had this idea that the moives were how the places actualy looked and that it still was going on like in the movies lol.

This has to be the longest running post i have ever seen! anyway i sort of see how ignorant some people can be. some americans i've met think that don't get that canadians don't all play hockey and get tones of snow and are slow talking simpletons. i remeber the funniest question i ever got from an american was "do they have gardens up in canada?"

It is a long running post, but I just stumbled upon this site and I have to reply to the original question: No, I wasn't particularly offended by this movie. Good grief. Alabama has been stereotyped for decades as the worst place with the worst people in the world. This movie wasn't nearly as insulting as Ally McBeal.
As Alabama natives (my ancestors came here two hundred years ago) we know better, but have been satisfied to live here happily and keep the truth a secret. Unfortunately, in the time this thread's been up, our population numbers have been going through the roof. Seems many people who wander through Alabama decide they want to stay here.
