Zeppelin Rulllesss!!
"The Greatest Game Ever Played"
shareI second previous posters choices of "Rudy" and "Breaking Away", and would also add "Searching for Bobby Fischer" and "The Journey of Natty Gann". Also recommended, but not yet on DVD, is Soderbergh's "King of the Hill". All are films which celebrate the "uniqueness" of the individual, and personal triumph.
shareThis Boys Life DEFINITELY.
It's arguably an even tougher situation with the father figure than in October Sky.
It's set around the same time as well so it feels similar in lots of ways, (and De Niro is fantastic in it btw.)

Whale Rider
The Pursuit of Happyness.(very inspiring)

The Right Stuff, a classic film about a fearless test pilot who constantly tests his (personal) boundaries.
sharePARADISE (1991), with Don Johnson and Elijah Wood.
Great movie in my opinion!
"When I read about the evils of drinking, I gave up reading". -Henny Youngmam
Through all of this and no one mentions The Shawshank Redemption? Easily, one of the most inspiring movies ever made. I've always felt inspired by Backdraft, Braveheart, and Stand and Deliver, as well. To make it an even five, I'll add The Bad News Bears, the original.
shareSomebody mentioned Whalerider and that is a fabulous movie about a young person overcoming the obstacles of parents/older people who don't believe in you, yet you believe strongly in hourself, and succeed in the end.
Another movie with a really intense father/son difficult relationship is Love Story. The tension between those two is extremely harsh.
Two more excellent inspirational movies that are true stories, and are based on father-son conflicts, are Billy Elliot (2000) and The Greatest Game Ever Played (2005). They are right up there with October Sky.
