I just wanted to say thanks. I came to the message board specifically to look for more movies like 'October Sky' and your very succinct message led me to watch 'Friday Night Lights', 'The Greatest Game Ever Played', and 'Saint Ralph'; all of which I thoroughly enjoyed so ... Thank You!
I chose your post because I have seen 'Seabiscuit', 'Cinderella Man' and 'Billy Eliot', all of which I also enjoyed, and that made me think that you actually understood what was being asked for; unlike many of the other respondents, who have suggested movies that, while some of them are good, are not in the same category as 'October Sky' and don't contain the same core ingredients. I'm sure you know what I mean? At any rate, you really helped me out thanks and it's my policy to always pay credit where it's due. I think Rudy is similar
overcoming obstacles, inspirational.. even the music and theme is similar.
Rudy! Rudy! Rudy! Rudy! Great movie about Rudy Ruettiger, who walks on to play football at Notre Dame and works harder than anyone to make the team.
Also try Miracle, about the 1980 U.S. Olympic hockey team who beat the Soviets and eventually won the gold medal.
There's also Hoosiers, about high school basketball in Indiana and based on the 1954 Milan High team that upset Muncie Central to win the state championship.
