how isnt this woke according to conservatives??

-you have a female kick two physically stronger men into the mud

-you have a black shaven head female punch out a male

-you have a black female sky marshal replace a disgraced white male

it must suck not being able to enjoy this movie for conservatives

reply

You obviously don't understand why people complain about "wokeness" in cinema today. None of what you mention here is "woke."

-She was physically able to kick them into the mud because she was swinging from a rope, had momentum, and the dudes weren't paying attention.

-The black female squad leader was a tough chick, again though she surprised Ace with that punch. It was a hard punch but it, realistically, did not knock him out.

-As far as the sky marshal; the movie is set hundreds of years from now, it's totally reasonable that a black woman could hold such a position so far into the future.

reply

None of that necessarily constitutes “woke”, nice try dingleberry.

reply

The whole movie is a one big joke.

reply

Frankly, I find the idea of a bug that thinks appalling!

reply

None of your examples necessarily constitutes woke agenda. The fact there's strong black females in the movie, not make it woke. Your statement shows a lack of understanding about the culture phenomena called "woke".

What is WOKE? here few criteria, some or most of them should appear in the film:

1. Superficial dichotomy between black/female/non-white and white males.
2. Racial or gender tensions.
3. The emphasis is on the characters identity and not character traits.
4. Criticism of the United States/west.
5. The emphasis is on the ideological - less about the story.
6. Using academic terms taken from postmodernism, gender study, post-colonialization and so on.

I will add extreme emphasis on representation.
None of them appear in Starship Troopers.

reply

Also remember this was 1997 long before 'woke' even became really even a thought. Females were making strides though.

reply

The film lacks a WOKE atmosphere, which is unsurprising given that it wasn't in consciousness of the filmmakers at the time. Starship Trooper" unmistakably bears the mark of its 90s production. People need to learn a bit about postmodern theories of identity politics to understand exactly what is meant by the movie "woke." The theories on which the woke is based have not yet penetrated the west culture and Hollywood.

reply

Commie bastards sure love misinterpreting the sci fi they watch. This board is getting like the classic Star Trek boards. "Cuz Star TrAk wuz always woke, even though we hate Kirk's toxic masculinity and need episodes of TNG banned for being waycist."

reply

Can't people just enjoy a movie for God's sake?

reply

Not when the movie is stuffed with woke messaging, no.

reply

I'd say it's not "woke" because it shows that a very progressive, colour-blind (Sky marshal is a black woman) and gender-equal society (mixed gender showers) can nonetheless be a fascist society, broadcasting around-the-clock propaganda ("Would you like to know more?") and sending its kid to war over a dubious casus belli.

how isnt this woke

Because it's an expertly written and directed film. High quality films do not get the same scrutiny for being woke because you can ignore certain smaller elements being questionable if all the biggest elements work very well. Current films get more heat for being woke because they are mediocre to poor.

Regardless, the film still has a white male lead, Casper Van Dien, who looks like a poster boy for Hitler's aryan race, as do all the main characters.

The black sky marshall appears onscreen for about 10 seconds, and the two leading female characters are extremely beautiful and not annoying mary sues, they're well written characters and acted well by two decent actresses, which means you don't care if they beat two stronger men, the men still save the day at the end while the tough female gets killed by the bugs.
