Was George Clooney a legit "movie star" when he did Batman & Robin?

Or was he still thought of as merely being "that guy on ER" who was still trying to break through into movies? I was reading comments on Reddit that argued that he wasn't really thought of as being a bonafide movie star until he did The Perfect Storm and O Brother Where Out Thou?

And I read that on Batman & Robin, he was only paid about $1 million whereas Uma Thurman was paid $5 million and Arnold Schwarzenegger was paid $25 million.

He'd done From Dusk Till Dawn the year before. I'd say he'd just got there.

Emerging movie star is maybe how i'd put it. Definitely not an established force at the box office. He definitely should have only been getting paid beans. I don't think the role did him any favors either. Kind of stumbled out of the gate with that one. It was that big push with Three Kings/Perfect Storm/O Brother setting up Oceans 11 that slotted him into the big time. Still not sure he'd be a household name today without Oceans. It was the exact right movie at the exact right time.

I remember when The Peacemaker came out in 1997 some movie reviewer commented that he didn’t have a successful movie career while he was still on ER.
