Other movies that do a 180 half way through?

Topic.

I wouldn't say it was a 180 in the style of "From Dusk Til Dawn", because both parts of the movie relate to the military, but "Full Metal Jacket" is essentially two movies in one.

The first half deals with the psychological, and almost sadistic, process of boot camp. The second half deals with the psychological and sadistic process of actual war.

Hitchcock's "The Birds" also does a sort-of 180. It starts out as a romantic melodrama, and then BAM! Birds go *beep* and start killing people. It really feels like the birds are invading a different movie, not like they are part of the same movie.

I just watched "Be Kind, Rewind" and that movie does a pretty strong 180 halfway through. It shifts from a goofy, lightweight Jack Black comedic farce about recreating blockbuster movies on the cheap, to a more serious movie about neighborhood character and preservation and the downside of gentrification.

DEFINITLEY Teeth. That is, if you never saw the trailer.

Lady, I never walk into a place I don't know how to walk out of.

This is a great topic. I'd have to go with those who said Something Wild and The Crying Game. Just like in From Dusk till Dawn, I never saw the change coming in either of these. Something Wild seems like such a fun, cute romance and then, bam, it gets dark and tense. I know the Crying Game goes back to the IRA plot near the end, but the change of tone between that first IRA segment and when Fergus goes to London was so extreme, and when it goes back to IRA thriller, the location and what has transpired in between make it so much different than the first segment. These extreme shifts are why I admire all 3 of these films so much. I love to be surprised.

How about the recent remake of 'The Time Machine'?

It starts as a tragic period drama, then jumps to a 'fish out of water' man from the past in the modern world, and then spends the second half of the movie in a far away fantasy land of repressed tree people being bullied by monsters.

Three movies in one!

Full Metal Jacket

A 1980s Stanley Kurbrick, Vietnam war movie with a comedic twist. at first it's kind of a comedy, but it gets darker, and darker, and then it's not funny anymore. It surprised me at a young age and the first half, is very different from the second half. Anyone who disagrees with that, well, this movie is still kick ass entertainment and you wouldn't regret seeing it anyway.

silver streak starts off as a romance/comedy then turns into an action/comedy. Still it's more of a tone shift than a 180. From Dusk Till Dawn is still the best example I can think of.

Almost forgot

"Big Trouble in Little China"

Big Trouble in Little China?

Don't see it. It's pretty straightforward right from the first scene when Egg conjures up some blue lightning between his palms. Gotta admit that was a dead giveaway.

He didn't get out of the cockadoodie car.
