I kid you not, I have never heard anyone tell me that they actually like this movie. I didn't care for it and I'm wondering is it just me and my circle or do people just not like this movie in general? I still can't believe this won best picture over "Fargo"
I have seen Fargo several times and I am still trying to figure out if this is a comedy, horror movie or a drama. That is what makes me have the opinion that this film is just too "campy" for me
For me, it is one of the best movies of all time. I haven't seen it in 10, maybe even 15 years, but there are scenes and moments from that movie that are etched in my mind still, and the emotion that the actors portray so well, the atmosphere, throughout the whole movie. At the end of the day, for me it is not just a romance, it is a movie about a love for life, against all odds, during World War II, when the world was in chaos and life did not seem to have meaning... yet the characters, not just KST and RF, but all of them, they continue to exert effort, to wake up every day with a fresh enthusiasm, to care for each other, to love...
The whole time I was sitting through the movie, ready to freak out of boredom. I ended up just shouting at the screen, "Quit telling your stupid story about the stupid desert, and just die already! DIE!" I hate it!
And to anyone who has a problem with that, Oh, go to hell!
It certainly is not a film for everyone. You have to be an admirer of Drama/Romance genre to enjoy The English Patient. I personally love slow-paced Drama's, so The English Patient was an unforgettable experience for me. Undoubtly, it was one of the best directed, best filmed and written films I have ever watched. It had a strong atmosphere that almost no other films had. But if you don't like this genre, then The English Patient can be the most boring film you can see.
I agree it's film especially made for the fans of Romance/drama genre. other wise you can get a little bored since yes peace here Is quite slow and it's an almost three hours film,
Personally I feel like it was a movie made for me since I'm huge fan of the romance genre in the three most common forms: Romanic Comedy,Romantic Drama/Tragedy and romance- Action like The Mask of Zorro, the last of the Mohicans and a few others.
There are three elements I look the most for in a good romance which is favorite movie genre those elements are
Great chemistry between our main couple Great actors Great story or plot
If you have these three it's all fine and I definitely think the English Patient had those 3 elements especially the chemistry between RF and KST
The English Patient is among the top quality films ever made, professionally speaking. Cinematography, art direction, editing, music and everything; it is one of the most complete films you can ever see.
But of course, liking a film or not is a matter of taste, The English Patient is a long and very slow-paced romance; if that is not your style, then I understand it can also be a painfully boring film. I personally would easily say The English Patient is in my Top 5 List; but I certainly can understand people who wouldn't enjoy it.
This is almost a perfect film. It IS "just you and your circle". I was completely taken by the beauty and quality of every aspect of it, the central story most of all. The reason it won Best Picture is because there are people of depth in the film community who are able to discern the difference between enjoyable little Fargo (which i also loved) and Greatness, which this is. Too bad for you you can't get it. That's a You problem.
If you're not in the mood for a slowish movie then don't watch this movie.
Personally, I like this movie and have watched it five or six times at least since it was released. I'm just taking a break from it during my latest viewing.
