Does anyone like this movie

I kid you not, I have never heard anyone tell me that they actually like this movie. I didn't care for it and I'm wondering is it just me and my circle or do people just not like this movie in general? I still can't believe this won best picture over "Fargo"

reply

To the OP: Yes, I'm sure millions do; I'm just not one of them - and this has nothing to do with Fargo (which I loved) not winning- or my favorite picture of that year, Secrets & Lies, not getting the BP Oscar.

Honestly, I don't mind a so-called "boring" film as I've liked and been moved by quite a few films that many would find to be boring. I just did not feel any real connection to the main characters. A book or film can purport to be about many things that would normally involve me - and even dress it up with great technique - but I needed more story and more sympathetic characters/situations to identify with.

Others - probably many on this board and elsewhere - would disagree.

ps I saw this in the theatre when released and tried watching the last half on TV just a little while ago.

David Lean remains one of my most cherished filmmakers so with that said, this film recalls that of his heyday. An epic love story. To me, this is Zhivago of Arabia. I am certainly a big fan of this film. Same goes for the film Out of Africa.

Lovely comment, joltzz: "To me, this is Zhivago of Arabia." I agree. I'm watching "The English Patient" now, and it never loses its beauty. And Ralph is so darned fine...

I just love it.

I like it a lot, and feel it deserved to be nominated, but I thought Fargo was better and should have won.

i loved it
it's one of my favorite romantic films I've seen, with great chemistry between Ralph Fiennes and KST

All the performances were great especially Ralph Fiennes.

My wife is a huge fan of the book. When she watched the movie she was overwhelmed and destroyed a medium-size box of tissues. I was impressed by the acting and cinematography, but never connected with it. Is it just "chick-flick"?

Fargo was magnificent.

Fargo is very good but usually the award goes to emotional films rather than suspence. Not saying that suspenceful movie won't win any, it is just the judge preference.

However, I think the English Patient is a very good movie. It is very slow and need 'patientce' to learn the whole movie. Fargo's pace is a lot quicker but cinematography and the screen writing, I think The English Patient is much better. In terms of acting, I honestly think there is only one actor in Fargo worth watching but in TEP, the acting were really brilliant from every character.

The award goes to TEP for that yearly award easy.

Just finished watching it after years...LOVE IT.

As another poster stated, it's poetic and beautiful.

This movie to me, despite the amazing cinematography, is more meant to plan a night alone in bed and watch it.

I can't imagine seeing this in the theatre, my ass would get numb lol.

Seriously though, it really is awesome watching it at home and alone.

It's a wonderful film

It's the best movie ever made! Period.

I liked it but didn't love it.

People always disagree about the awards. Lol no one is ever satisfied. People always have specifics on whom or what they want to win. No one will ever agree.

I use to not like it and thought it was boring. I now love this movie. I think it’s better to see at home. I don’t think I could have set that long in the theater. It would hurt my butt. I’m one of the few people that I know enjoy watching this movie. It has an epic quality, gorgeous cinematography, beautiful score and fantastic actors. There chemistry is sizzling. I agree with the person who said it’s beautiful and poetic. Fargo is amazing movie as well.

Absolutely loved it. It didn't feel like a 3 hour movie at all. The time raced by. I'd actually love to see the original cut which was 4 hours and 10 minutes long. That would be a real treat.
