Clint Eastwood did well since he was directing and starring. Gene Hackman was good.
I felt Morgan Freeman was a bit of a letdown. Could've done much more with his character.

SPOILERS

To me, Unforgiven refers to William Munny himself. He killed everyone, women and children, and I think all that took a toll on him, and even if he did turn his life around for a while, he could not forgive himself. That's my take on it anyway.

Enjoyable watch, but only a one-time watch for me.

From what I've seen, I'd say Tombstone, but different strokes for different folks.

I can turn Tombstone on any day of the week and enjoy it with repeat viewings, something I can not do with Unforgiven, but I would rate Unforgiven as the better film and possibly greatest western.
But you’re right, it’s a different stokes for different folks kind of thing.
Tombstone rates in my top three westerns.

I'm not hugely into Western's but it's the only one I own. Fantastic film. Love them all, but Hackman makes it for me.

I consider myself a huge lifelong fan of Westerns and the 3 Westerns most casual or non-fans of Westerns always consider the best are Tombstone, The Unforgiven and Silverado. No offense to their fans, but I don't really care that much for any of those three. I consider them Westerns for those who don't like Westerns.

Unquestionably, Used Cars starring Kurt Russell.

It has the greatest shootout in western film history, I mean how do you top Marshal Lucky blowing the living shit out of high prices?

Speaking for myself, some of my favorites are The Wild Bunch, Little Big Man, The Searchers, The Magnificent Seven (1960), The Dollars trilogy, Pat Garrett & Billy the Kid, Ulzana's Raid.

Most dedicated Western fans agree anything by Sam Peckinpah, John Ford and Sergio Leone are solid gold.

And in most post-1980 Western movies everyone is piss-yellow from the sepia filters they use to make sure we know it's in the past.

It's just that those Westerns seem to me like "greatest hits" packages of Western movie memes to me rather than actual Westerns, especially Silverado and Tombstone. Nothing is in them that hasn't been seen before. I would hope that people who like those "big three" will decide to have a look at other Western movies.
