Better than the series

This movie was sooooo much better than the series. I hate how people say the series was better, the original is always better. Luke, Kristy, David, Paul and Donald were all great in it. Oh and I can't forget about Hillary Swank and Ben Affleck.

reply

HELL NO lol, I'm sorry I am going to have to disagree with you. I've seen the entire series, and have watched the movie. The movie doesnt even come close to being as good as the TV series. Theres way more offered in the series than the movie. Plus the entire "Buffy" thing was Joss's idea...and the movie did not go the way he planned (which he states in many commentaries on the series DVDs)because it became too "Holloywoodized." The series is what Joss intended Buffy to be... and I dont think anything could be more true than the 7 seasons of Buffy!

i just wanna say Jordana Brewster rocks! saw The Invisible Circus and The Faculty a few weeks ago. she is a captivating presence on screen. i mean, she's just breathtakingly beautiful. yeah, totally unrelated to this board, i know.

I agree,
the movie was nothing on the series,
the series is alot more popular than the movie.
The fact that you pointed out seven seasons was one way of prooving this but the fact that buffy had a spin off that also brought out 5 seasons further prooves this. It's very rare that a spin off is as sucsesfull as Angel, has anyone seen Joey? It's nothing compared to friends. Buffy the series is definetely more sucsesfull.

reply

I love both equally...I'm totally oblivious to the cornyness of the movie until someone starts pointing stuff out...otherwise I enjoy it alot.

I don't understand why everyone spends so much time telling everyone how bad this movie is and insulting everyone who likes it...I mean if you don't like it, get over it, no one cares. If you hate it so much leave and stop posting here.

I really wish the original script was used though...or the fight scenes had more......well more fighting in them. The only action we get to see is when Buffy is training and that's no fun 'cause when she actually fights vampires she just gives them a punch or two then stakes them...I used to only like the series solely because of the fighting, but then it grew on me and I like everything about it now...but this isn't about the series..

This movie isn't the best movie of all time, but it definately isn't the worst....I mean have you seen House of The Dead?

The original is not always better. How could you make a mass generalization like that about films and expect to be taken seriously? In the case of this particular movie: I loved it, I thought it was funny as hell, but I also loved the series.

It's not better than the series. Not by a long shot. It's just different, that's all. Why must you compare the two at all? One is a film and one is a TV series. One lasted for less than 2 hours and one went on for 6 seasons. Get a grip.

While I agree with what you said, I just wanted to point out that you've got some facts wrong. The movie was only 86 minutes long, not 2 hours, and the series went on for 7 seasons, not 6.

reply

Actually, the series wasn't necessarily more popular than the movie. The movie has kind of a cult following like the series does, but the funny thing is that for the most part the movie and series can't really be compared at all, the only thing they have in common is the title charachter and that's it. I love both of these equally and actually was happy that it went they way because there were elements of the movie I didn't like as well as the series.

As for acting Sarah Michelle gellar's acting ability, the series isn't what you would use to prove that she has it. She has won an emmy, but I don't think award wins make you a great actress, they do make mistakes in awards i.e Marisa Tomei for My Cousin Vinny.

Anyway, you really have to use her movies to show her ablity. she was pretty good in Cruel Intentions, and I think she did a good job in the grudge. But the reality is that Joss Whedon created the series and my guess is that he thought that Sarah was good enough to be buffy, because the series did last 7 seasons.

reply

What are you talking about? "the series isn't what you would use to prove that she has it" Just go watch episodes like Innocence, Bad Girls, Consequences, Who Are You, The Body and tell me she doesn't have it. She was much better on Buffy than any of her movies.

reply

You may be right about those episodes, but how come you didn't add Hush into the list?

reply

Because I dont think she stands out that much in Hush. Everyone was just great. But Sarah really shines in those other episodes.

I liked the episode where BUffy was talking to Spike and he's telling her about the slayers he killed. I really like it because it brings out more "story" in the show not about Spike, but about slayers. I thought it was really smart, how Buffy would keep saying something about what was it about that last fight that finally killed the slayer...

she so clearly doesnt understand the vision that joss whedon had! Joss Whedon walked of of the set of this film because of people like that!

Kristy isn't necessarily to blame, it's the director.

reply

Sarah Michelle Gellar is great in Buffy. She was awesome in "The Body"! Kristy Swanson did suck in the Movie, she tried too hard to be Buffy whereas Sarah she just was. The movie was bland and everyone came off as harsh and cold (along with the cold acting). The show was much more eye grabbing when the movie kind of bored me a little. The only time the movie was better than the series was when the Series hasn't been made yet like someone before me said. The movie bombed so get over the show is majorly better =)

No, I think you've got that reversed. SMG is miles better than Kristy. I guess you've never seen the episode The Body. The series is at least 10 times better than the movie, regardless of who is playing Buffy.

reply

you can tell cos the vampires look really poxy. The show had a better budget, but the storylines were weak still...

I got this T-Shirt for my girlfriend. It was a great trade.

My main problem with the show, (aside from the fact that I loved the movie first and used to recite the lines with my dad cause he loved it too), is that it was too overly dramatic and it defeated the whole purpose of Buffy character in general. I get the dry wit and sarcastic dialogue and all blah blah blah, but what made Kristy Swanson's Buffy so funny was that she was a bimbo. Her name was BUFFY for christsake's!!! Gellar's nerdy Buffy totally ruined what was great about the movie, and lost sight of the fact that it's name was "Buffy the Vampire Slayer."

I don't think anybody who's a die-hard fan of the film could really enjoy the show anyway, but the show just took itself, (and the whole concept period), wayyyy too seriously. There was nothing that great about it to begin with. That ironic, dry wit was present in almost every dumb WB show...Dawson's Creek, Popular, Gilmore Girls, etc. Teenagers are just annoying when they attempt to recite lines that sound like something some arrogant, jaded adult would say. Everytime I heard Dawson talk about some old school 70s band I wanted to barf. And the Buffy character going from a bimbo cheerleader to an obnoxious smart-ass was a letdown. Swanson's Buffy would make fun of Gellar's Buffy if they ever met. The film was simple campy fun, (Clueless meets Fright Night), and the snobs who watch the show always use the word "smarter" as their best defense. But just remember nerds: without that movie you think is so dumb, the TV show would not exist and Sarah Michelle Gellar's career would never have gotten off the ground. She's a sucky actress who's career got better because of some stupid overrated show.

And where is she now? HELL-O?!

reply

kendoll82: By what you wrote, I'm guessing that you've never heard of the fact that the TV show was made the way that Joss originally envisioned the movie to be done? The movie was supposed to be a dark comedy mixed with horror, but the studio and/or directors changed it into this light teen movie that just happened to be about vampires.

The film was simple campy fun, (Clueless meets Fright Night), and the snobs who watch the show always use the word "smarter" as their best defense.

Of course, the show is "smarter" than the movie. Just take a look at the depth of the writing. If there wasn't any, then there wouldn't be college/university courses taught based on the show or analytical books written based on it such as Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Philosophy: Fear and Trembling in Sunnydale or What Would Buffy Do? The Vampire Slayer as Spiritual Guide.
But just remember nerds: without that movie you think is so dumb, the TV show would not exist and Sarah Michelle Gellar's career would never have gotten off the ground.

Actually, if the movie was made the way that Joss originally envisioned it, he probably wouldn't have made the TV show. On a side note, if it weren't for the show, most people wouldn't have remembered the movie. When the movie came out, it was a box office bomb. On the other hand, the TV show has gotten lots of critical acclaim, is widely respected, has influenced other TV shows (such as Alias and Dark Angel to name a few), and has been nominated for and won awards including the Emmys.
She's a sucky actress who's career got better because of some stupid overrated show.

Sucky actress? I guess you really haven't seen much of her work on Buffy. She's actually a pretty good actress. As for how her career got better--who's to say that something else wouldn't have come along to make her a star if she wasn't on Buffy?
And where is she now? HELL-O?!

Just take a look at her info on this site. She's got 4 movies coming out this year, and 2 next year. Kristy Swanson, on the other hand, seems to be stuck doing TV shows and made-for-TV movies.
BTW, calling people "nerds" doesn't help your argument.

The tv show is like a hundred times better than the movie, firstly because the movie wasn't Joss' true vision and it was so cheesy, like c'mon look at the villian. But it is a good film if you want to have a few cheap laughs, but this is only my opinion. As far as i'm concerned Btvs(1997) was/is the best show ever.

kendoll82 - Your absolutely right. Actress's career's do get better when they are on an overrated tv show. I can't believe the amount of work the people from Saved by the Bell and Full House are getting. The poorly rated movie (that got bad reviews) did increase the chance of the series. I'm pretty sure the producers of the movie dove to create the series 5 years after; it probably wasn't Joss pitching idea's to various networks on the "smarter" view of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Who's Sarah Michelle Gellar? Wasn't her last movie The Grudge? Wasn't it a big blockbuster hit? I also swear I saw her in Scooby Doo. Also that name! Gosh, anyone who's name is Buffy should be prepared for years with broken nails and bikini waxes. They should of named her "Dragon" or "Iron Fist". That screams vampire slayer.

reply

I'm sorry, b i t c hgirl, but when was Saved By the Bell or Full House ever overrated?! I know ur attempting to be cute, (SNAPS FOR YOU), but I think you overdid it a little. Nice try though.

And Sarah Michelle Gellar wasn't the reason The Grudge did good...that movie was all premise and no plot, and people went to see that because they knew what they were getting. The Ring made $120 million dollars, so why do u think that crappy movie was made in the first place? It already had a built-in audience. Sorry---not impressed. And Scooby-Doo was a kids movie. I can assure you that nobody went to see that heap because of Sarah Michelle Gellar. And even so, who's care if they made any money or not?! That doesn't make her a good actress. But ur probably a lesbian aren't u? Do u lay in bed at night and fantacize ur Willow and SMG is your girlfriend? I mean, u are a Joss Whedon fan...Do u watch your Buffy DVD while you're waxing your sideburns and upperlip?

slaming someone for what probably isn't their sexuality (and who cares if it is?) isn't exactly the most mature thing in the world.
although i skipped alot of the thread i have to agree that they aren't comparable, many of the plot points in the movie (eg. flying vampires) are inconsitent with the series and vice versa (eg. permision to enter private property). the movie amused me, while i enjoy the series for its depth and cinematography(sp), especially since it was relatively low budget.

reply

Okay... My take on this..

'Buffy' the movie ... I have always really enjoyed it. I like Kristy Swanson and I like the simplicity of a rather interesting story. I think it's great.

'Buffy' the show ... I also love this very very much because all of the characters are well developed and change so much.. I find it quite entertaining.

This is all a matter of opinion here. Those of you who can't understand that need to grow up.. I'm assuming half of you are a bunch of moronic teenagers.

And as for the LESBIAN and sexuality slamming.. I'm a gay male myself. Whoop-dee-doo.. That's really smart..tormenting someone because of their sexual orientation.. obviously if it's such a big deal to you...you're probably struggling with being gay yourself. Hey, it's okay to be gay..a lot of us are.. chill out and stop humiliating yourself.

reply

The series is way better, in my opinion. I love it so much!

reply

okay let meend this discussion by saying this.

with most people, not all, but with most, they like the first variation of something better then they do the second. most of the older people here on this board saw the movie first, and thought it was excellent, but did not like the series. but most of the younger people here saw the show first,as myself, and thought that it farly surpassed the movie.

there is what i think.

I gotta agree with you there. The TV series much much better than the movie because the TV show is what the movie should have been. The TV show is Joss's baby because this time, he wasn't forced to rewrite his scripts.

Joss doesn't like the movie because what we see in the movie isn't what Joss wanted. Joss was forced to re-write his script to be a lightheaded comedy, the original script was a dark horror movie.

You can read Joss's original script (before he was forced to re-write it) at http://www.dailyscript.com/scripts/buffy_the_vampire_slayer.html .

I liked the movie but I have to admit its CHEESE compared to the series. I love Hilary Swank but her character Kimberly was so fake. Cordelia makes a better snob and rival to Buffy in the series than Kim.The series had better more developed characters. Most of the characters in the movie were one sided.

reply

Firefly kicked the crap out of both of them. And I love Buffy the series.

Don't deny it.

reply

Well the fact that the series had more developed characters is due to the fact that you have more to show in a serie than in a 90min. movie.
I personnaly think when u saw the movie before there was the series, you would've appriciated it. When u see the movie after u've seen the series, you'll probably think it's made by amatures.
I loved the movie back then and I still like to see it from time to time, but you can't deny that the series is better than the movie.
Both actrices were good as Buffy, Sarah Michelle Gellar does have the advantage of being a more developed character than Swanson.
