Better than the series

This movie was sooooo much better than the series. I hate how people say the series was better, the original is always better. Luke, Kristy, David, Paul and Donald were all great in it. Oh and I can't forget about Hillary Swank and Ben Affleck.

OHMYGOD! the TV series is way better.

Did you know that Joss Whedon was so upset with the way the film was going he quit.

Colour me shocked!

I love both the movie and the show.. but come on, the show is better. What I don't understand is that I see people saying SMG can't act but that Kristy was great in the movie.. how is that? I don't think Sarah is the greatest actress ever but why are people praising Kristy so much? She was painful to watch in the movie, her acting was terrible. And Luke Perry? He wasn't much better.

How can people like the movie but not the show? The show has taken a fine movie and expanded the universe even more. The show has had many, many, memorable moments. The only moments in the movie worth remembering are the laugh the basketball vamp does and Paul Reubens refusal to die. So in the end, while both are great, the show is better. And please people.. quit saying Kristy Swanson is better.. she's never had a lot of talent.

Sex with robots is more common then you'd think.

Comparing a 2-hour (or less) movie to a 6-season series is so stupid and pointlesss and brain-draining that... that... I don't even wanna talk about it anymore!!!

Why can't you all just like them both (or not), acknowledge that they're two different genres, and MOVE ON??? Jeez, this thread just keeps going round-and-round and the end result is always the same - NOTHING IS RESOLVED.

Sort of like a hamster running on one of those wheels in a cage - he just gets nowhere, but he keeps on going and going and going...

I agree with you, but at the same time, no one's forcing you to read the thread.
BTW, the series has 7 seasons, not 6.

Good point, Princess. And thank you for the correction. Wow, that's impressive!

You've actually proved that you're so much more intelligent than me by catching my little typo. Yeah, have fun on the hamster wheel. Buh-bye now.

Whoaaaa! Have you even seen the series?
They are probably the best series ever shown on TV in modern time...
Great developed characters, beautifully written, excellent dialogue, most of them are well directed, etc...the Buffy-series are really, really great.
But the movie...eh...it sucks.

I just watched the movie and I have seen every episode of the Buffy series, even the unaired pilot, and I have to say, there is no comparison between the movie and the show.

Kristy Swanson was a mediocre actress: She was alright as a ditzy valley girl, but I could not buy her grief when Merrick was killed. She can't do emotional scenes.
Luke Perry was an alright actor, but at the beginning, before he and Buffy had met, Pike was just some guy with a van who kept popping up and I didn't see any point in him being there. He wasn't an interesting or diverse character, and I couldn't bring myself to like him.
Lothos was really lame as a vampire (by the way, why do they FLOAT???): all he did was prowl around baring his fangs and making weird snarling noises. And PLEASE GET A HAIRCUT!!! He was annoying and incredibly cheesy, as was the 'Count'. I could not suppress a groan as he lifted his arms to reveal his huge batlike cape. In fact, I groaned pretty much every single time I saw him. What kind of vampire doesn't kill his enemy because SHE isn't ready!? A regular vampire would go ahead and kill her before she killed him, which baddies on the series would come to realize (Glory, berating herself for not snapping Buffy's neck the first time she laid eyes on her).

Donald Sutherland was actually quite likeable as Merrick, but the interaction between him and Buffy seemed forced, as if, well...they were ACTING. I didn't care when he died, their first joke was overrated, the bit about PMS was annoying and overall, I liked the Merrick that appeared for about 20 seconds in the second season finale of the series.

My biggest beef about the movie however, was the script. I laughed at the special effects, and that was about it. The movie dawdled on the boring parts and rushed the climax. There was no twist, nothing I didn't predict, nothing that made this movie anything more than a cheesy 90's horror flick.

I don't know what happened between 1992 and 1997, but Joss Whedon sure cleaned up his act and managed to make a show that dazzled viewers over and over with his sheer genius. In particular:
- The Body (5x16)
- The Gift (5x22)
- Conversations With Dead People (7x07)
- Chosen (7x22)
- Becoming Parts I and II (2x21 & 2x22)
- Hush (4x10)
- Something Blue (4x09)
- New Moon Rising (4x19)
- Restless (4x22)
- Every Faith storyline (Seasons 3 & 7)
- Every Oz storyline (2, 3 & 4)
- Every Tara storyline (4, 5, & 6)
- Every Anya storyline (3, 4, 5, 6 & 7)
- Every Angel storyline (1, 2, 3 & All of "Angel: The Series")

By the way, originals are USUALLY better, but not in this case...
And also, Ben Affleck (whom I detest) had about 3 sentences and 10 seconds in this movie. I don't see how you can mention him as one of the good actors in this, since he's basically an extra.

I personally found the movie to better then the series also. I'm not saying that the series wasn't at all good. I found the first three seasons enjoyable, but it turned in to a bunch of rubbish after that. I thought the movie was rather funny, and Kristy was excellent as the airheaded barbie, turned ass-kicking vampire slayer Buffy Summers. I'm not SMG wasn't great in her portrayal of Buffy, but they were obviuosly portraying two different Buffys, and it seemed like the character of Cordelia Chase on the TV show was more like the old Buffy from the movie. The TV series is supposed to take place after the movie, you hear little hints of that through out the first couple of seasons, but it seemed like the originality of the show was snuffed out after the first three seasons, and it turned from Buffy slaying vampires, in to Buffy battling demons, witches, cults, zombies, mummies, and unidentifiable creatures of all sorts. When in the movie did she ever kill anything other then vampires? I just think that the show got a little off track on what the movie was supposed to be about. It was slightly entertaining, but lacked what made the movie what it was.

What you said made absolutely no sense. Right from the third episode of season 1 she battled more than just vampires, because only battling vampires would be quite boring after a while.

You couldn't be more wrong. The TV show was created because Joss Whedon was dissapointed with the way the movie turned out. BtVS the movie was supposed to be a darker movie with a little bit of comedy, but it was turned into a lighter movie. The TV show on the other hand, is done exactly the way that Joss wanted the movie to originally be done.

I saw the movie after i was already a big fan of the series, so i guess i'm a bit biased, but I strongly believe that the series went into much more depth than the movie did. As a cheesy teen movie, it was ok, but the series had such great characters and an amazingly unique plot. As for the cast, everyone in the tv show had such amazing chemistry with one another but the movie's cast didn't seem that realistic. If the movie hadn't been at least sort of good, the series never would have been made, so maybe instead of comparing the two, we should just realize that the series is an evolution of the movie.

reply

Well, I was just expressing my opinion on it, as I have every right to. I agree with the original poster that the movie was better then the series, and the series had it's cheesey moments. I thought the musical was dreadful.

reply

I agree with the original poster. The movie is a hell of alot better than the vastly over-rated show.
Then again, I could never stand Sarah Michelle Geller.

Kristy Swanson IS the only Buffy. :)

Over-rated? More like underrated. You can like the movie all you want, but the truth of the matter is, the TV show is far superior.

I think that the two women did a good job with portraying the role of Buffy Summers. They had to portray two different Buffys and they both did an equal job. I thought the movie was a little more fun to watch, but the she show is o.k for those that like that kind of stuff.

reply

Most people who like the movie (and I personally like the series better) seem to be saying that the series is no good because the main character is not an airheaded cheerleader. That's what's called depth. If there were no layers in the character of Buffy, it would get very boring to watch. Joss even said in 2003 that Sarah Michelle Gellar is the only Buffy because she understood the character in ways that no one else could. 'Buffy' doesn't have to mean airhead- it can simply be the most feminine name and that was the point. A young blonde girl gets attacked in an alley and kicks the crap out of her attacker. Kristy Swanson did a fine job with the character that was portrayed, but if I had to watch that portrayal for more than two hours, I would be very bored and hating it very much. I'm happy that the character was able to grow up and accept who she was meant to be. She had fun and she had to grow up too fast. I've never been more entertained in my life, than when I'm watching the series.

I was talking about the posts that said the series isn't good because it's so different from the movie character. I agree that she changed into the vampire Slayer, which is why I think the series is semi-consistent with the movie, only it's more focused on Joss' vision.

I saw the movie after i loved the show and i think it was good but disappointing i think the vampires are so much better in the series, in the movie they look like giant elves with pointy teeth. But witht he movie being in 1992 i guess thats the best they could do. Kristy Swanson was a good buffy but Sarah Michelle Gellar is WAY better. and in the series, if it was based on the movie why dont they ever mention Pike i think he should have atleast een a gues star in one episode. And the Villian in the movie SUCKED
I rest my case

i agree with you murderedkurt, i much prefer the original movie. i never got into the series with SMG, in fact i've only ever watched half an hour of one episode and was so bored that i turned it off. i think the main reason people like the series is because it has SMG in it. i'm pretty sure if she dropped out and some other female led the show, the series would go down the plug hole. maybe i'm biased since the movie is from my childhood, but i can confidently say that i enjoyed the original movie much more.

Of course the series would go down because no one can replace SMG. The show wasnt' a hit just because she's pretty, she was great as Buffy.

to be honest, i don't really care either way. buffy the series has never interested me. maybe if it were that great, it would have.

It was great. Just cause you don't like it doesn't mean it wasn't. Far more critics and fans praise the show than the movie.

i don't think it was great. i think it was very boring. and just because you like it, that doesn't mean it was great. it works both ways buddy.
