"Session 9" is a must (and so is "The Machinist").

Please, "The Machinist" was a pathetic attempt of a thriller. What I've come to find about many thrillers is they substitute suspense for substance and they ultimately have little payoff. After the first viewing there's often little left to desire.

"The Machinist" was unbearable to watch. It falls into the category of those thrillers: "Somewhere I *beep* up and I have to get to the bottom of it." "Memento," Jacob's Ladder" and "Angel Heart" fall into this same category, except they are much more interesting and have a profounder message than that B-movie "The Machinist."

I'm truly sorry Christian Bale put in so much effort for a budget film with minimal payoff. If anyone cares to enlighten me on the greatness of "The Machinist," please do. It was unbearable to watch the first time around and it's not something I would want to waste my lease on life watching again.

"The Descent".

Jim Jarmusch's 'Dead Man' depicts another man's journey into death.

Why has no one mention THE DEAD ZONE with Christopher Walken????!!!! such a *beep* good movie, and it has a really similar tone and feel to Jacob's Ladder and you have a real overwhelming sense of fate lingering everywhere, so *beep* beautiful.
SUCH A *beep* GOOD FILM!!!! Also Dead Man is goddamn masterpiece and Johnny Depp's best film to date IMO, nice one for mentioning it, it does have that eirie feel to it like J.L. and T.D.Z. and the feel of death is all about.
*beep* there are so many good movies in the world!!

I'd recommend "Angel Heart" as a movie similar to this, not because of the plot, but because it had a similar feel and tone to JL.

Also, "Perfect Blue", the first and IMO best anime movie by the late Satoshi Kon. It may seem strange to compare anime (or any kind of animation, frankly) to JL, but the movie had a very similar effect on me: it was scary, it had imagery that has stayed with me since, and I was thinking about what really happened for days afterwards.

It was originally planned as live action, but the budget collapsed and so it was animated instead, so it's pretty incidental to the film (although I think some of the images and scenes would have been difficult to pull off convincingly as live action).

I'm reminded of the bit in Ghost World, after Seymour has given Enid a record of Skip James's "Devil Got My Woman," and she asks if he has any other records like that, and he says, "There are no other records like that." But that's probably not helpful. A lot of David Lynch's recent films would qualify, I think (Lost Highway, Mulholland Drive, Inland Empire from what I hear, though I haven't seen it yet). Pi. I'm not naming stuff you're likely to not know about already, but I know I know some. Crap, I'll get back to you.

I AM NOT MONTEL WILLIAMS.

Okay, I thought of some more! I knew I could eventually.

Carnival of Souls (1962)
Don't Look Now (1973)
Repulsion (1965)
Picnic at Hanging Rock

You might also appreciate the films of Jan Svankmajer, and there's some similar disturbing imagery in the music videos of the band Tool, directed by the band's guitarist Adam Jones.

it reminded me alot of 'a matter of life and death' (powell and pressburger, 1945), but darkness is mostly removed from the powell and pressburger movie. it's more the idea of a life lived in the throes of death - also hitchcock's Vertigo has a similar meta-reality. and mulholland drive and inland empire share a similar conceit with jacob's ladder (i.e. where is the film's reality located?).

i am also not montel williams.
