3/10 Quite liked the first hour or so, it was well done up a certain point, but beyond that it was so self-righteous and preachy in certain parts I almost threw up (well, not really but you get the idea). Too long, too dumb, too pink, flat out hated the sequence where Ed Harris is in the alien ship thing, being shown those alien slides things. How dumb was that?? I was hoping the whole thing was a hallucination by Ed Harris's character and that he was losing his mind or something. The whole thing just seemed stupid to me.

And I mean how hypocritical was it of James Cameron to make a film like this? Here's a guy who had just made The Terminator and Aliens (films I really like btw), two films which central themes are war, killing, destruction, end-of-the-world scenarios, war again, etc. And then a couple of years later he decides to make this, his own mission statement about the cold war and stuff that was going on. Nah it was garbage. Stupid floating pink aliens who can apparently project the news onto TV screens made out of water. lol. Pretty awful.

7/10.

It was probably his worst movie, a little boring and overlong.

7, first 2 hours were pretty great then came the rubbish ending...

I ranked it a 10 at the time. Purely because I loved the film.
I'd rate it a solid 9 now (Directors cut).

I gave it a five. It's not a bad film but it is a mostly mediocre one.

This will likely stay on my short list of all time favorites, so... (goes to sit with the 8 and up crowd). I would probably, realistically, give it a 9, but I wouldn't be embarrassed to give it a 10, either. It's an emotional roller-coaster like no other film I know. In fact, I can barely stand to watch "those scenes" any more, as I've grown tired of the complete mess they make of my composure.

Fantastic. I have the collector's edition, and in my opinion the artistry revealed in those discs is extraordinary. From the underwater set, to some of the shots of "Bud" descending the trench (crumpled paper and a doll? Wouldn't have guessed that in a hundred years, as, to my eyes, it was so convincingly realistic)...
