Would rank film 7/10 - saw the film for first time last night and enjoyed the first half greatly. Many people criticize the second half as sentimental and indulgent, easy to see why but wasn't as bad as thought it would be. Overall, positive!
shareA 9/10. By far my favorite of Cameron's movies. I used to watch it all the time when I was younger.
sharethe drowning and recovery scene is the most powerful scene of its sort that i have ever encountered, the acting is right up there for every single one of the cast and the imaginative story mixed with such intelligent directing makes this film a 10/10 in my book.(i dont have many) I know it has some flaws, i've never seen a film without one, but i don't care about them in this. blew me away in 89, even more so with the extended cut and has never let up since.
fan of cameron but not a huge one, this film will last in my collection for as long as i can play it.
thank you, rant over lol.
A 7. While I felt it dragged on a whole damn lot, it still had a pretty good back story to build on and the nuke revelation kinda got me into the 'insane badass' mood.
The music wasn't too bad, I guess.
But overall, I felt the insane length did drag the tension down somewhat. Though that's nothing to blame on the actors or anything, it's just......
It just felt like a great part of the film was just some kind of an experiment rather than a story being told. That kind of turned me off about it.

9.5/10
A near flawless under water masterpiece with excellent character development, a brilliant plot and special effects which still hold up well 21 years on.
In fact, I now rate The Abyss as Cameron's third best film, along side T2 and Aliens.
...
I gave it an 8, it was a good movie, but not the greatest movie.
"...I'm having an old friend for dinner"- Hannibal Lector
A nice round 10. I love this film.. grew up with it.
shareI give it a solid 8. Loved it back then and love it still now.

8/10. I really like it, but feel it's a touch overlong at times. Also, the ending is really cheesy.
"Three years...I promise."
5/10.
