Predator laugh at the end!
Remember the laugh of the Predator at the end when he was about to die and a small nuclear bomb will explode!? It was scary and evilish as *beep*!

shareYeah. That it was. I liked that part. Though it does take away the Predator's honor to blow up its prey when its prey beat it fair and square.

Perhaps the Predator felt humiliated by its prey, so much so in fact, it thought it better to die by self-destruction rather than by Dutch's doing. From the Predator's point of view, humans are not considered very sporting material, only fitting to be hunted by rookie predators. The Predator was not only outwitted but embarrassed.

Predators may have also had a code of conduct that required them to completely destroy themselves if defeated in order to prevent their technology from falling into the hands of the “lesser species” to be examined.
If that self destruction just so happened to take out someone who is a threat and managed to take out a hunter, well, so be it!
That reminds me, when watching this a few days ago on Saturday I realized the Predator left his plasma canon and mask quite a ways from where it died. Which means a person might find it.
shareSOMEONE HAS FOUND IT...AND HE IS CALLED THE GUYVER...https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0101988/
shareLOL!!!
shareThanks all for the replies but my op point was specifically about the Predator's laugh which for me was very scary and devilish.
By the way, since almost all of you are saying the Predator was embarrased defeated by Dutch, why the laughter?
His way of saying, "I lost, but I am still winning by killing you." Just like Japan's Kamikazes in WW II. "We may lose but we will still take you to hell."
shareNailed it.
shareI don't think so, if that was the case he should have not laughed but tried to keep Dutch close. And doing a sneak bomb when bested by Dutch would not be honorable. I got the impression the Predator was 'warning' Dutch of what was about to happen so he could either get away or not but know what was about to happen. He didn't want to 'sneak' attack suicide bomb Dutch, IMO
shareThe predator is not "honorable." Why should it be? After all, it is an alien. Just like another culture does not have the same mores my culture has. To me that is the only sense in laughing.
"It ends here, my way, and I am taking you out as well."
[Edited to add] Laughing is not warning. How can it be?
Clearly the predators have an honor system which is why they do not kill unarmed or pregnant opponents. It is not clear what that honor system is but it obviously exists. It seems to be me to be a 'you only kill a worthy trophy' anything else is subpar and dishonored.
If his goal was to kill Dutch why laugh about the bomb; that clearly gave him a heads up to get away. The predator is not dumb, why would he give a clear warning to something he was trying to kill; IMO that does not make sense and did not seem inline with the creatures behavior throughout the rest of the film
Honest trailers ..
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CGgA9t7mghY
pretty funny
"uses advanced technology to hunt the equivalent of fish in a barrel, i guess he's less cool when you realise he's like those yuppies that pay to shoot giraffes with a sniper rifle"
Love Honest trailers; they bring up a good point too. One mistake of this film was showing the alien ship in the beginning; Predator does not have many mistakes but that is one. How much more awesome would it have been to 'speculate' on what it was throughout the film without the beginning showing the ship. In fact one of the first times I saw this film was a recorded VHS and the recording started after that beginning; the film was improved by missing that scene.
shareNaw then everyone would be wondering why there was a random extraterrestrial out in the jungle.
shareer , no , the point of not showing the ship is so that the viewr could speculate on what it is.
could be CIA stuff?
bioweapon escaped , whatever ...
also , if you alrerady assume alien and wonder "why there was a random extraterrestrial out in the jungle."
then showing the ship doesent really help one way or the other.
Sorry but I don't think the CIA had a space ship in 1987 much less that they have a space ship now.
sharewhy is this such a tricky concept for people to grasp?
"If the spaceship wasnt shown, people could speculate on what the Predator might be, as it is they know its an alien"
You cant put it any simpler.
That doesn't mean anyone would automatically think it's a CIA agent.
shareYes but there could be speculation that it was a demonic force or something 'supernatural' or even a really clever human with somehow gotten advanced tech. The speculation would 'add' to the fun and then later when you see it for the first time you will see it is an alien.
I mean most would figure it out real quick anyway; probably when Blain dies you would realize it is an alien with that plasma canon but until then there would be some fun speculation and intrigue. You'd be hungry to know what it is at first; thus making the reveal that much more satisfying.
Showing the ship right at the start tells the audience right away it is an alien and it takes any chance of mystery away.
How much more interesting would be Arnold's team speculation on what happened to Jim Harper's team if you didn't already know it was an alien?
I don't agree with a lot of the posts about humans considered only "rookie" targets. I always took it as Predators thought of humans (especially the 'Alpha' humans such as Dutch) the most worthy opponents, or maybe the 'final' test. So I don't agree that the predator was embarrassed; I think the self destruct was not to kill Dutch but to almost 'warn' him to get away.
I got the sense that it was the predator protocol to self destruct rather than be captured or leave proof of it's body and technology for human study. The laugh I think was an honor thing; to tell Dutch I am about to blow up, you have a few seconds to get away
That laugh was a recording of Billy's laugh from the first fight. Billy was serious the whole time even when Hawkins was telling him jokes. After the fight was over, he laughed out loud at Hawkins joke.
I think it was the Predator's way of saying the fight was over. Same thing he saw happen before.
"I think it was the Predator's way of saying the fight was over. Same thing he saw happen before."
That is a good point; it could have just been the predator accepting defeat and just saying he was done fighting. He may have had no care or objective of what Dutch did at that point.
A recording of Billy's laugh!? Billy laugh was kinda weird but not scary but anyway good point!
shareOh, really good point!
i am reminded that there were "a whole sequence of shots" showing predator "paying attention to & recording" Billy's laugh. A clear sound-waveform appear in predator's point of view.
By your theory, this laugh-recording-sequence are "justified" at the ending.
"That laugh was a recording of Billy's laugh from the first fight."
I was just going to post the same thing. I'm surprised anyone missed that, since Billy's laugh was so distinctive.
Same. And if I remember correctly the Predator used “recordings” of peoples voices throughout the whole movie.
