The Thing 1982 or The Fly 1986 which was better ?

I do not really care for The Thing, it seems cheap and unfinished in its execution. The characters are like cardboard cutouts, and there's no sense of momentum to the story. I think The Fly has a better screenplay.

Well, if I had to choose, then I'd go with The Fly.

The Fly is better.


The Thing has better cinematography and more action. A great setting too in Antartica.

The Fly has the better OST (truly oustanding work by Howard Shore), superior characterizations and emotional depth. It's the romance and tragedy that really pushes The Fly ahead.

They're about a tie regarding special FX. Both are superb in this regard though I find The Fly to be more grotesque and gruesome. So maybe a slight tilt in favor of it here too.
