The Thing 1982 or The Fly 1986 which was better ?

For me there both brilliant. I love the practical effects in both films and there both scary.

Direction: The Thing

Characters: The Fly
Performances: The Fly
Musical Score: The Thing (very tough one)
Special Effects: The Thing
Atmosphere, Fear, & Horror: The Thing

Both are great movies, and The Fly is a better character study. Personally I feel The Fly could've gone even deeper and focused more on Brundle's failing relationship, which it really doesn't. It feels like a 90 minute cut of a really powerful 2.5-hour movie, and I'd much rather see that 2.5-hour movie. The Thing has weaker characters and Russell doesn't even match half of the power of Goldblum, but Carpenter's vision and atmosphere go almost unmatched in the horror genre. His film is also much tighter and feels perfectly paced despite only being about 100 minutes. So THE THING wins.

Interesting selctions... for me musical score isn't tough at all, Howard Shore's OST for The Fly is phenomenal whilst I've always found Morricone's minimalist theme for The Thing to be amongst his lesser work (his best work was in spaghetti westerns and giallo early in his career).

For the categories you're using I'd go for;
Direction - The Thing
Writing - The Fly
Characters - The Fly
Performances - The Fly
Musical Score - The Fly
Special Effects - The Fly (this is pretty much a tie to be fair)
Atmosphere, Fear & Horror - The Fly

I'd give The Thing the win in photography and editing. It's a better shot movie and feels like the bigger budgeted and slicker work of the two. Cundey brought a lot to Carpenter's early works with his talent as a photographer.
