The sad thing about the entire movie is that Apollo could've easily lived

There is really no reason (other than I suppose a pride and ego issue) for Apollo to get back into the ring and face Ivan Drago. He by the looks of it, is financially stable, thus it isn't like he needs the money. And it isn't like Drago goaded him into fighting him like Clubber Lang did to Rocky in the previous movie.

Or even he himself did to Rocky in the second movie. But in that case, it made sense since Apollo wanted to shut his critics up about Rocky "going the distance" not being a fluke.

And as Adrian tried to tell him, he had been formally retired from competitive boxing for many years. Rocky himself added, that they didn't know anything about this Russian guy.

I know that within the context of the storyline, the Cold War was still raging and the Soviet Union was being painted as the arch-enemy of the United States. But on the outside looking in, why should I care if a Russian is good a boxing (other than the stuff about Drago being chemically enhanced)?

Boxing is an individual sport, where essentially, everybody is out for themselves. This isn't exactly the Olympics, where there's a built in reason to want to root for your country.

I get that they needed Apollo's death as a reason for Rocky to go to Russia to fight Drago, but I think they could have written this a bit different.

What I would have done was have Apollo beaten brutally by Drago just as before, but have him in a coma and brain dead at this point. Rocky flies to Russia to train as before. A few days before the fight, the KGB agents that are watching him smugly inform Rocky and Duke that back in America, Apollo was finally disconnected from life support and died.

Rocky and Duke have that cathartic moment where they wonder if the fighting and revenge were worth it after Apollo died and actually discuss quitting and going home. Finally, they decide to fight on for Apollo's memory.

After beating Drago, Rocky and Duke return the states and are greeted by their wives, families, and - Apollo in a wheelchair, who actually came out of his coma and was slowly recovering.

For a seemingly shallow movie, the characterization of Creed had a lot of depth. No, he didn't need the money. No, he wasn't really trying to make a geopolitical statement.

He just couldn't handle not being in the action, on top of his game anymore. He was in denial about getting older and not being able to compete as the best of the best. It's incredibly hard for a man of 40 to realize his best days are behind him. In reality, one would like to think that someone as smart as Creed would transition into being the best at something else, like Schwarzenegger did. But something about the drive in boxers always makes them think they have one more great fight left in them.

Good observation.

I'm kind of surprised that Apollo didn't get into broadcasting. You would think that being a super charismatic and telegenic guy, networks would be groveling in hopes of making him a part of their TV shows.

Apollo picked the fight He had it coming

How could Apollo possibly be expected to live when his death was intended to further the plot? Doomed from the beginning he was.

He could have still lived and forwarded the plot. Look at post #2.

No, he needed to die to show how evil Drago was
