The Goonies sequel or prequel

Can anyone please explain why the next installment has never made it to film?

Absolutely brilliant movie for starters. I saw it on release as a 13 year old in the UK and it blew my mind. Great story, superbly acted by every member of the young cast and action at every turn. My children loved it growing up and into their teens for the same reasons I did and I've no doubt their children will because it holds up so well. So I'm left wondering why a studio hasn't picked this up for a sequel? I've heard the "story has to be right" reason but surely with the success of shows like stranger things and it's child cast now would be the perfect time to bring something to life. I see it as financial stupidity for a studio to not do something with the intellectual property.

So the Goonies 2, set in present day with the children of the original characters. Filmed in the same town with the characters attending some kind of reunion. Their children go off roaming for an adventure and ends with the parents finding them on the beach like the original. There is so much lore within the town and chances for nods to the original.

Kevin Smith should be commissioned to write and direct.

A Goonies Movie Sequel Isn't Good Enough - It Deserves the Cobra Kai Treatment

With Ke Huy Quan making waves in Hollywood again, The Goonies could revive his Data and produce an epic TV show akin to Cobra Kai.

Thats a crazy idea. The Goonies don't know karate

Whatever Happened to 'The Goonies' Sequel?

'The Goonies' never say die, but 'The Goonies 2' has never come to life for a multitude of grave reasons.

Since director Richard Donner has passed away, I wouldn't count on a film being made. If done proper, I would have no objection to The Goonies getting the "Cobra Kai" treatment.

Turning the Goonies into a political correct version for braindead kids? No thanks.
Although, Cobra Kai season 1 was really, really good. Unfortunately it completely crashed after when it went PC and the writing dropped to Mariana Trench levels.

Which is why I said, "If done proper." I have no faith that it can be done proper by the modern crop of Hollywood writers. The only way I could see it happen, is if it were helmed by a writing team and production company that despises political correctness and would go all out to avoid the whole PC thing.

Agree 100%.

Kevin smith does not belong anywhere close to this movie if it ever gets green lit

A part of me always wanted a sequel but not sure if it would work. Ok, you have the kids back now as adults and their children go on an adventure and then what? I don’t think you can do the same thing again and have it work. Who would the villains be? Where would this adventure take place? You can’t have them take place in the tunnels under fratellis house again so where?

It would be very difficult to make a sequel work is s as ll I’m saying

I'm not against the idea of Goonies 2 as it does sound pretty cool. It's just that it wouldn't generate enough audience interest.

Also, I'm skeptical about Kevin Smith writing and directing a sequel to an 80's property considering Masters of the Universe: Revelation was so terrible.

a prequel about how the dad got the treasure map and rock thing.

Yes, and the doomed adventure of Chester Copperpot!

1 fuck Smith and his style has got zero to do with this.
2 a prequel about One Eyed Willie, that is ok.

No on all counts.
