This has got to be one of the worst films i have every seen. The acting is terrible.
Although the film is bad it is not the worst ever music biopic (50 Cent get rich or die trying).
The music is great although. Purple Rain is one of my favorite ever songs.
I loved the movie for what it was and what it still is. It was a chance to showcase one of the greatest talents pop music has ever produced.
Yes it's cheap and gritty and has only two established actors in the entire cast. The movie is there as a pseudo-bio pic about Prince. It's a music film, it should be sitting next to The Last Waltz, not Goodfellas.
Jump back to the 1980's. Prince, Madonna, Michael Jackson and Bruce Sprinsteen are the superstars of American music. Bruce never made a movie, Jackson made The Wiz, Madonna made Shanghai Surprise and Prince made Purple Rain. Which one do you want to watch 20 years later? Which one stands the test of time?
I totally agree but I love "The Wiz" also. It was the first time in my young life to see an ensemble African-American cast with so many iconic principals involved.

However, I was underwhelmed by the movie. For years I kept hearing about the movie "Purple Rain" and kept avoiding watching it for some reason, but after reading reviews about it and being told by fellow Prince fans what a good movie it was, I decided to give it a try and was dissapointed for the most part. I mean don't get me wrong, Purple Rain definitely had it's moments, but Prince and Apolonia are just terrible actors lol. I'm sorry, I love Prince but he's not a good actor and the movie was just "okay" overall, certainly not the worst i've ever seen, I mean it's tolerable and entertaining enough but it's not great either.
Well don't know how old you are. This was basically made by music performers themselves. It was a very good movie for 1984. For people of Prince's generation this film helped us understand him. Just how many films have you seen?
