WORST FILM EVER - Anyone agree

This has got to be one of the worst films i have every seen. The acting is terrible.

Although the film is bad it is not the worst ever music biopic (50 Cent get rich or die trying).

The music is great although. Purple Rain is one of my favorite ever songs.

If you were a teenager or in your early twenties as I was when this was released, this film was 'it'. Unfortunately, as a lot of things from the eighties, it doesn't stand the test of time.

I've just rented the movie and the word that comes to mind now is DISASTER. Yes, I was extremely disappointed by this picture. The script is junk, sorry Prince!
The music is unbelievable, but the script, uh-uh. What were they thinking then, in the 80s?
Those guys could act just like I can make a rocket.

The beautiful ones and Purple Rain are my personal favourites.
And Mariah Carey's rendition of Th e Beautiful Ones did justice to Prince.

Such nastiness.

I don't know that the movie itself is so terrible, but Prince's "acting" is so painful to watch as to be almost comical, IMHO. Other performers were actually quite good in the cinematic medium - Apollonia, most of the Revolution (Wendy and Lisa come off particularly believable), but the man who steals the show has got to be Morris Day (along with his over the top valet, Jerome). Why that man never got more screen time in later years is a mystery to me - in my opinion, his scenes are the only ones with dialogue worth watching.

However, that's not to say that Prince's innate musical genius doesn't come through in the performance segments. Someone else posted that it's great to watch it on DVD and select up through the chapters to watch the performance parts exclusively - I'd have to agree.

A few years ago I showed this film to a friend of mine who hated Prince but liked the movie and watched it multiple times. Not all people who support the film adore it. I like how it's a small time capsule depicting pop culture at that time. Then during the film's popularity it influenced pop culture. A majority of the soundtrack stands the test of time which is also a big part of the allure. I like how some of the songs become part of the storyline through body language and reactions to them -- even though the lyrics don't exactly parallel what's taking place in the film.

The first time I saw Purple Rain I didn't like it at all. But watching it again with a more lighter outlook on it I really LOVED it. I watch it all the time now. =D

I have to wonder when people use the acting in this movie as a reason to think it's terrible just what exactly were you expecting? These are professional musicians playing themselves or at least caricatures of themselves. How much acting chops do you need to play yourself? I think it would have been strange and totally unbelievable if they started acting on the level of DeNiro or Streep. I just view the movie as a slightly fictionalized glimpse into Prince's life and the lives of the people around him. Plus, the music is off the hook!

Charlie Murphy!! *punch*
- Dave Chappelle as Rick James
