Can a movie be great at 193 minutes???

Not sure I have ever finished a movie longer than 150 minutes without saying "I wish they'd cut it down a bit". Any examples of loooong movies that can hold the interest? Not sure this one fits the bill...maybe JFK?

Way too long. Ran out of momentum halfway through, without clear climaxes or direction, except the obvious chronological.

Strange, the Lithuanian VHS version I saw from my friend's collection was 153 minutes long, and it still felt too long for me.

OP -

Sorry - gotta disagree with you.

Great long films:

- Gone with The Wind (238 mins)
- Aliens (Special Edition) (154 mins)
- The Abyss (Special Edition) (171 mins)
- Ben-Hur (212 mins)
- Spartacus Restored Edition) (197 mins)

Gone with the Wind: 220 minutes - I think not counting intermission.

In my opinion. If a film is truly great, then the run time is irrelevant as you would be so engrossed in it that the viewing time flies. Personally, If you're looking at your watch while watching a film, you are either a:) not in the right frame of mind for a film at that time, or b:) have a short attention span.

Personally The Right Stuff has always seemed like a ninety minute film to me. The same can be said for films like Lawrence Of Arabia, Godfather II, Gone With The Wind, Bridge On The River Kwai and several others.

I love great long movies like The Right Stuff. There are a number of great ones.

My favorites include;

JFK
Nixon
Lawrence of Arabia
Malcolm X
Schindler's List
Gandhi
The Godfather I & II
Once Upon a Time in America (the 229 min. one)
Dances With Wolves
Inglourious Basterds
Scarface
Fanny & Alexander
King Kong
Carlos
The Best of Youth
Titanic
The Last Emperor
The Good, the Bad & the Ugly
Once Upon a Time in the West
The Green Mile
Hoop Dreams
Saving Private Ryan
Cloud Atlas
Short Cuts
The Dark Knight
Zodiac

My least favorite include;

The Master (It's 144 minutes, but feels longer than that)
Papillon (151 minutes; feels like an eternity)
Pirates of the Caribbean Series (they're each 45-60 minutes too long)
LOTR & The Hobbit (2 hours each is all I can take for such escapist movies)
Transformers (they're an hour too long each)
Girl With the Dragon Tattoo (2011) (could've been tighter)
The Postman (one of the most insufferably long movies I've seen)
Bad Boys II (why almost 2 and half hours?)
Funny People (96 minutes worth of movie in 146 bloated minutes)
Alexander
The Lone Ranger

Movie-Jay -

You have great taste!

We have some films in common:

JFK
Nixon
Schindler's List
Inglorious Bastards (doesn't feel like a long film)
Scarface (it needs that long exposition)
Titanic (ditto)

I love films with a long exposition - extended version of Aliens makes more sense with the extra footage.

But I Am Legend feels like a whole heap of ruthless editing was going on.

Sorry, I've gone off topic

I'm not comfortable judging a movie by its length... or girth.
