Can a movie be great at 193 minutes???

Not sure I have ever finished a movie longer than 150 minutes without saying "I wish they'd cut it down a bit". Any examples of loooong movies that can hold the interest? Not sure this one fits the bill...maybe JFK?

As the late Roger Ebert once said, "No great film can be too long, and no bad film can be too short."

Almost all of the people who saw the original version said that Erich von Stroheim's film "Greed" (adapted from the ridiculously good novel "McTeague") was without a doubt the greatest movie of all time.

Its original running time was over eight hours, meant to be shows over the course of two evenings.

"Greed" was a silent film but very dark, very "realist" (many critics hated it for being so "gross" and not glossing over the horrors of poverty, desperation and violence) and very well shot and acted. Unfortunately, much of the original film has been lost, so we can only watch a 2-3 hour version of it now. Wish there were some way to see the whole thing...

The last scene (filmed in Death Valley) particular was supposed to be breathtaking. Stroheim went unbelievably far over his allotted time and budget for the movie, and after spending weeks in Death Valley with almost no comforts, the actors were close to done - many were passing out from heat stroke. For the final fight, the only way the director could get the two main characters to keep acting in the hostile conditions was to tell them to "pretend the other guy is me." Also, the wedding scene (a very sickening and grave scene, many subtle references to death and a funeral procession is seen going by out the window) was eerie and haunting - and the people were just... scary, devouring their food like total pigs.

It was ahead of its time. Plus, the poster was badass:

Unbelievable that after the director ate up an unheard of amount of money and time (and reels of film... some obscene amount of film was used), anyone with a brain would make the decision to throw most of the footage out. I think the studio was more than a wee bit pissed.

Hope I helped answer your question!

Is this even a serious question?

Barry Lyndon, Andrei Rublev, Lawrence of Arabia, The Right Stuff, Once Upon a Time in America, The Good the Bad and the Ugly, Malcolm X, The Godfather Part II...all fantastic movies over 3 hours.

People who say a great film is too long is an impatient jackass, I wish all movies had the balls to be 3 hours like The Right Stuff. Meanwhile people binge TV show for days and days and stupid Broadway productions can go on for 5 hours and nobody bats an eyelid. Why do the film fans have to get all the impatient doucheturds? :(

yes a great movie can be as long as it wants, if it's good you wont notice it at all

personally i could've watched 3 more hours of Interstellar

so many movies, so little time

I love long epic movies. Sometimes I can't watch them all in one sitting, so I watch a little at time similar to reading a book. The greatest films ever made were also the longest, The Godfather, Gone With The Wind, The Great Escape. Long movies aren't made anymore because it's difficult to show them in theaters. I worked at a theater during Titanic's original theatrical run and the most screenings we could do per day was 6 (three apiece on both our biggest screens) they were sold out everyday by 2pm and we couldn't refund or allow theater changes due to lack of perfect seats.
