Can a movie be great at 193 minutes???

Not sure I have ever finished a movie longer than 150 minutes without saying "I wish they'd cut it down a bit". Any examples of loooong movies that can hold the interest? Not sure this one fits the bill...maybe JFK?

Dude, I saw this movie when I was 7 and was completely entertained. I would have sat down longer to see more of this amazing movie.

"Once Upon A Time In America" 230 minutes and it's one of the best movies ever made. I wish it where longer.

reply

I felt the opposite. I look at my watch with many movies over 2 hours. This one actually held my interest up until the feather/fan/whatever dance.

A movie can be great at 193 minutes. As long as it has a good story, characters that the audience is interested in and/or can relate to them, directors that are highly skilled in making a film that is well over 3 hours long. The Deer Hunter, Scarface, JFK, Once Upon A time In America, The Godfather, The Godfather Part II, Dances With Wolves are just a few of the many fims that were close to or over the 3 hour mark were highly enjoyable for movie buffs and fans. So, regarding your question: Can a movie be great at 193 minutes: my answer: you betcha. A film's running time doesn't mean anything to me, as long as it has the elements that I mentioned early in my responce.

That's great, but you're preaching to the choir. You replied to the wrong person ;-)

The Lord of the Rings, Gone With the Wind, Schindler's List, The Godfather, Dances with Wolves, Braveheart, Titanic, and Ben Hur are all movies around 3 hours that are usually considered great.

reply

From modern times: Cloud Atlas... though with "just" 173 min rather short for this list ^^

Haven't watched Schindler's List and Ben Hur, but the others you mention are fine with their screening time... but this one here, The right Stuff, had scenes that made me press the fast forward button... esp the blablablabla~yawn~blabla press conference and the feathered dancing queen.

from a personal perspective... how about The Wolf Of Wall Street (179 mins.)?

I'm not putting in my report that I lost a crew member to find an alien named Jerry- Barnes

Return of the King EC is a masterpiece, and it clocks in at 4hrs 10mins. I, for one, think modern movies are way too short. Bring back the 3+ hour TRUE epics!

I totally agree! Modern movies are too short, they do need to bring back the 3 hour films

This movie was absolutely great in all of its 193 minutes.

I still remember when I saw it as a kid, on video, and if anything, the length only enhanced the experience for me. Like reading a really good book (such as the Tom Wolfe novel on which it was based).

What helped was the transitioning focus from the Yeager and the test pilot program to the Mercury selection process through the Mercury flights themselves (and the final coda back to Yeager). You got various "flashpoints" to keep you interested--Yeager's first flight, his second flight, the announcement of the astronauts, Shepards' flight, Grissom's flight and Glenn's flight.

It was more like a condensed mini-series than an overly long movie. The extended length (with the intermission) gave it an epic type feel to it, and if you were fully engrossed in it (as I was) you relished every minute.

Agreed 100% about the movie. My only complaint is that so much was left out from the book. Then again, to make it that way it would have put the movie at 6 hours plus.

Great movie, re-watching for the umpteenth time as I type this.

There's always exceptions to the rule, as pointed out above, but...

Not sure I have ever finished a movie longer than 150 minutes without saying "I wish they'd cut it down a bit". Any examples of loooong movies that can hold the interest? Not sure this one fits the bill...maybe JFK?

opinion is subjective and subject to change.

There are good long movies and crap short ones.

Having said that, I do tend to agree with you in that this film could have done with a bit of cutting down.

I also agree that JFK was a good long film. I rated it 8/10.

There are two films that run longer than 193 minutes and I've rated 10/10: Once Upon a Time in America and Lawrence of Arabia; both cited by others above.

For the record, I rated this film 6/10. It was a good story though; I suppose it's just the way it was presented.

Apocalypse Now Redux is arguably the best thing ever made, and that's 193 minutes as well

The redux version of Apocalypse Now is so much better than the original

I agree. Apocalypse Now is obviously amazingbut Redux never fails to blow me away. I even love the plantation scene, it's so hypnotic and tranquil whilst still being unsettling. So good!

If a movie who is that long feels great for you or not, simply depends on your taste in movies.
For me, it did not even feel like i had been watching the movie for over 3 hours when the end credits began, it felt far less.
