Funny you should mention that. I saw the film for the first time recently. Before inserting the DVD into the player I looked at the back of the box and saw the running time. This made me view it in a different way, I guess. As more of a world and an immersion into that world than judging it as a piece of art. I think that's the best way to evaluate art, seriously: to see if it has created its own world. If it has, then you can spend any amount of time in it. Either Siskel or Ebert said the following (I'm paraphrasing): a bad movie is too long and a good movie is not long enough. This movie, an excellent feature, built up its own world so well that I didn't notice the passage of time. And besides, it has to be thorough in the story as it covers a lot of ground--from Yeager breaking the sound barrier to the first astronauts. That's a big, moving story with many moving parts encompassing not only the men, training and missions, but America in that time. So, yes, a movie can be great at that length.
