Can a movie be great at 193 minutes???

Not sure I have ever finished a movie longer than 150 minutes without saying "I wish they'd cut it down a bit". Any examples of loooong movies that can hold the interest? Not sure this one fits the bill...maybe JFK?

If you took a look at the top list, many of the films are over, or close to 3 hours long.

Seven Samurai
Godfather I and II
Lawrence of Arabia
The Green Mile
Lord of the Rings Trilogy
Schindler's List
Once Upon a Time in the West
Saving Private Ryan

There are many, many more great long films on and off the top list.

I'm not saying that you'll liek all of them, but it doesn't seem like anyone minds the run time of these films.

Well it was great for me....

Maybe at the cinema it would be a bit long without a break, but I am sure they would have an intermission if it was in the cinema!
At home, on dvd its great to put on and watch with the kids, get them to know the story of the Mercury missions.

Now what I want to know is if there is something about Gemini or Apollo?

They normaly do with movies that are 3 hours long or more. The cinemas also know, that people needs a toilet break at some point.

This post has to be a joke for about 10 different reasons. JFK? LOL!!!!

Seven samurai and the lord of the rings movies were great. However, I did not like this movie, at all. It is painfully boring, and I'd say probably 45 minutes could have been cut.

Don't know if these have been mentioned before but Magnolia, Barry Lyndon, Casino and Inland Empire - all 180 mins

We've met before, haven't we?

When I saw "The Right Stuff" for the first time back in 1983 I wanted to see more even after three hours, I didn't want the movie to end. I loved the idea of space travel back then. ----- But as I got older I realized what a waste of money the space program is. ------ I wish someone could explain how I might be wrong. ----- 😊 ----- Rusty

Funny you should mention that. I saw the film for the first time recently. Before inserting the DVD into the player I looked at the back of the box and saw the running time. This made me view it in a different way, I guess. As more of a world and an immersion into that world than judging it as a piece of art. I think that's the best way to evaluate art, seriously: to see if it has created its own world. If it has, then you can spend any amount of time in it. Either Siskel or Ebert said the following (I'm paraphrasing): a bad movie is too long and a good movie is not long enough. This movie, an excellent feature, built up its own world so well that I didn't notice the passage of time. And besides, it has to be thorough in the story as it covers a lot of ground--from Yeager breaking the sound barrier to the first astronauts. That's a big, moving story with many moving parts encompassing not only the men, training and missions, but America in that time. So, yes, a movie can be great at that length.
