How Come Death Star 2 Was Ready So Quickly?

When we watch Revenge of the Sith we can see construction under way what must be over 20 years at least before Death Star Classic is finally up and running in ANH.

Discounting the non canon Rogue One and it's stupid idea that they'd just spent twenty odd years building a big round space ship without any idea whether or not they'd get a laser working (!), that means they must have repeated the process in what ? Maybe a year or two for this one...

How could that have even been possible?

What's the explanation for this? Legends and new canon excuses will be acceptable for purposes of discussion...

"Death Star 2: Electric Boogaloo."

Just building another easy target like the Death Star was stupid as hell. But, Lucas was never big on logic. Little of it makes any sense. Having a powerful shield generator on the moon below was smart, though. A rarity for Lucas.

reply

It was certainly a stupid idea if you want to keep the audience engaged. In order for the story to work, we need to believe that the Empire was bigger and stronger this time with a superweapon we'd never seen before.

And Lucas comes up with another Death Star that we'd already seen destroyed in an iconic scene? He was going through a divorce at this point so I think he'd just given up and it shows.

reply

The original idea was that the Death Star was going to be around for all the films, and get blown up in the last one.

But Lucas didn't know if he'd even get to make more than one, so he blew the idea in one.

reply

Maybe slave labour helped. I'm sure the 'real' explanation is documented somewhere in a pedia.

Lucas was smart to introduce the shied generator for the purpose of a cool hectic third act going back and forth between space and the planet (and inside the Death Star II).

It was in a geosynchronous orbit above a specific spot and at a very low 'altitude' maintaining that position, so it would have had enormous power generation and usage just to stay there and keep from falling into Endor.

Construction on 2 began shortly after 1

reply

Is that from some Star Wars novel / comic?

reply

Earlier versions of scripts mentioned 2 or 3 of them being built at the same time

reply

Really? That's interesting. Thanks 👍🏼.

If Palpatine returns in episode 10, perhaps he will have a whole fleet of Death Stars at his disposal

reply

No he is finally dead for good. But his brother Ovaltine will be out for revenge in the next movie!

reply

I wasn't even aware that Palpatine had a brother

reply

He was kept hidden away in some dungeon until he escaped recently

reply

Finally Disney came up with a good idea. I'm looking forward now to episode 10. I wonder how strong he is with the dark side

reply

He ain't called Chocolate Ovaltine for nothin!

reply

I had no idea chocolate Ovaltine is a Disney brand. I love that drink

reply

Yeah, they bought that company right after Star Wars bought Purina. Movie proof:

Like in Contact

reply

I don't remember Death Stars being in Contact. Are you talking about that Jodie Foster film?

reply

Yes. In that movie, there was a second massive machine space portal thing built in secret in case anything went wrong with the first one.

reply

I really need to re-watch that film. Haven't seen it since it first came out and don't really remember anything about it...

reply

I find in construction and DIY work , and mechanics , and programming
Everythings easier second time around

reply

Yea building something like a Death Star is even easier a 3rd time around. A 3rd one could have started building at the beginning of episode 7 and be completed by the end of the movie

reply

When I first saw the image of the second Death Star in mid construction I thought it was the original that partly survived the explosion.

reply

Your implication is they can only build one Death Star at a time.

If the Empire has the power, resources, and labor force, why couldn't they construct multiple Death Stars in multiple locations at the same time?

reply

That's a good point.

reply

Technological breakthrough in the use of construction technology.

When we watch Revenge of the Sith…

And that’s your problem right there. You shouldn’t even be using a movie that came out in 2005 to ask why the 1983 movie has a discrepancy. Or else you’d also be asking why Chewbacca doesn’t tell Han that the Jedi and Force are real and that he fought with Master Yoda in the clone wars.

The issue is not with return of the Jedi, it’s with the prequels being dumb.

reply

I concur... But I was just looking for any potential official excuse / explanations...
