Blair was Originally Written as a Woman...?

The story goes that Dr. Blair was originally supposed to be a woman, but the actress got pregnant in the interim, and didn't want to be stuck in the Antarctic for it, perhaps understandably. Anyway, the character was retooled and given to Brimley, and the rest is history. I'm curious who the original actress was, but nobody seems to know. I even interrogated ChatGPT, but it threw up it's hands too. Any of you serious movie buffs know anything?

The movie wasn't shot in the Antarctic.

Not to mention the effects working with the thing could’ve had on her unborn child. Smart move.

yes great actress!! shame she splits from john carpenter they have son who look like combo of both parent.

If the details of the story are as unreliable as the shooting location, maybe it can't be trusted anyway?

reply

Speaking of locations and trust, Carpenter said something about filming which indicates that he won't let loose lips sink ships: "The crew stayed in a barge that had pulled into the harbor there. And me and the actors and producers were staying at this hotel in town. And wow: Actors on a location with nothing to do on a Saturday night, it’s a dangerous situation. But this was in Stuart, British Columbia, and it was right near Hyder, Alaska. It was right there on the border. This was a town where they had thrown out the sheriff and burned down the police station, so it was completely wild there. It was a quite a location, but lots of things went on that I cannot discuss with you here."

reply
