Does such a job exist?
Is it realistic for a hotel to have a job where just one person takes care of the building by himself without anyone else present?

shareA place that big? I wondered the same thing. But it would save money, and I guess since on one is around, there's no real challenge. So, maybe so.
shareI would imagine in real life, there would be more than one caretaker in case a task requires more than one person or in the event there were an emergency or other serious circumstance.
shareYeah, I think usually there's a team when it comes to winter caretakers.
And the overlook is huge. Could be King's artistic license there.
Extras for emergency purposes makes sense.
shareIt seems like a person should have a background in carpentry, electrical, plumbing and HVAC for a job like this.
shareI'm still looking for one of these jobs.
There are plenty of large apartment buildings that have a single caretaker even with the units occupied all year round. With a hotel that is well maintained I think it would be less work to watch it over the winter considering the wear and tear element is gone. The rooms are all empty with the power off, heat to everything is supplied by one boiler.

while you're here i am new to this site and would appreciate it if you could tell me the purpose of having everyones profiles show their replies. I've never seen that on reddit or quora etc. when you click on a profile it obly ever shows what that persons posted so do you know a scenario in regards to the type of person to use this app as to why they would need to see what others replies are.
shareThat's how it was on the original IMDb message boards. So the owner here was trying to emulate that as close as possible when he made this site. This website was to be the premier replacement for the old IMDb boards.
shareI'm surprised the hotel would outright close in the winter at all. Places with snow attract winter recreation guests for skiing, snowmobiling and just cozy getaways. Maybe that was different in the late 70s/early 80s, but skiing was definitely a very popular sport at those times, as was snowmobiling, although less popular than skiing.
shareI don't know. Interesting question. Maybe the mountain in back was too dangerous for skiing. Maybe the roads going there weren't able to handle the cars in the winter. Maybe plows couldn't make it up there in the winter. Could be many reasons I suppose.
shareDid you not watch the film? Ullman says in the interview after Jack asks him this exact question that it would cost more to keep the sidewinder open than they could make from winter sports.
shareeven if a one-man job like this existed, i highly doubt they would hire a drunk writer instead of an ex-cop or someone with HVAC experience
shareYeah, in modern times, yes. Back then, things were much much much more lenient and laid back without all these rules and regulations about such and such this and such and such that. More importantly, it was Jack's friend Al Shockley that got him the job there since he had controlling stock in the hotel.
shareTo be fair he was an ex-teacher.
Wasn't he offered resignation in exchange for the drinking not going on his record?
As far as the hotel was concerned, he was a teacher and family man who wanted to write a book.
I once worked nights in a hotel on the desk , after everyone had gone to bed I'd just bum around drinking beers from the bar and watching movies good job but paid little , anyway sometimes I was completely alone in the hotel and no guests there when major renovations took place but still had to have one person in the building at all times due to insurance reasons so maybe that's a universal thing
shareI heard of caretaker jobs on isolated islands:
