The son just happens to be psychic and just happens to end up at a haunted hotel?

Pretty convenient lol

It's totally weird. There's a story that needs to be told and there JUST HAPPENS to be characters in that story? Talk about convenient!

reply

Yep. Haunted hotel gets innumerable clientele every single year. Maybe the movie should have showed us the story about any of those other non-psychic folk, in which nothing happens to them because the hotel doesn't want to eat them.

😆

Lots of places are haunted.
Lots of people are psychic enough to "notice" but not be in real danger.
And some are psychic enough that they open the door for the spooks...

Danny just hadn't happened to have been to many places at all yet, let alone haunted ones.

reply

Lots of places are haunted? Any actual evidence of that?

reply

Maybe I was being hyperbolic, maybeb I meant only within the Stephen Kingdom ;)

reply

It would have been much more realistic if the son hadn't been psychic and the hotel hadn't been haunted. They could have just lived there for the winter without much happening. Realistic movies are fun.

Missed opportunity!

reply

Lol. That thought crossed my mind, too. But Danny has been seeing things for a long time, hence the invention of Tony. He just happen to come to a place that had a lot of drama in it.

reply

Yep. After a measly 72 years in operation, and 72 winters with a caretaker and his family staying over there to maintain the place, the hotel just coincidentally gets its first psychically gifted person to stay over the winter. Super convenient.

Danny is probably not the first psychic to visit the hotel. Grady the caretaker (and later a ghost waiter) went nuts 10 years earlier and killed his 2 young daughters. One or both of the daughters might also have been psychic, which prompted events that led to their eventual demise.

Granted this may not be the official explanation but this is my interpretation. We know from the ending that Jack in a reincarnation of a previous hotel guest (and I’m guessing Grady was also). The hotel due to the mistreatment of the Indians when the hotel was being built put a curse on the guests that when they die they are reincarnated and have the Shining (so yes Jack may have had the Shining just didn’t realize it). Through the Shining they are drawn back to the hotel for the Caretaker job where the hotel seduces them, makes them go crazy and gives them a blood sacrifice by killing their family. Danny has the Shining because Jack had the Shining and it was passed down to him. Jack having the Shining is how the hotel was able to plant the seed of chopping his family up in his dream. Then the shit just hit the fan when Jack and Danny went into Room 237 which was basically like the heart of the hotel or something. When you go into Room 237 the ghosts come out and they can now actually physically hurt you (which is how the woman in the bathtub was able to strangle Danny and how Grady was able to let Jack out of the pantry). Jack drinking the whiskey at the bar and him kissing the woman in the bathtub is representative of Jack being seduced by the hotel and it draws him into insanity and a desire to kill his family. This may not be much, I’m kind of sticking a square peg in a round hole but it would mean that it’s not a coincidence that a psychic kid just happens to end up at the hotel.

This is more or less how I always thought of it. The story portrays a supernatural force that we don't understand and by admitting that we are saying we don't understand the methods employed by the force. My assumption somehow was always that the hotel called to the family. The legend is thick with this film/book and it looks like you've done some thinking on it.

Regarding psychics and the hotel isn't the character played by Scatman Caruthers supposed to have something of the shine or something?

reply

Yes Dick Halloran does have the Shining. I think the novel states that he inherited it from his grandmother (we know from the film that she had the Shining also), how his grandmother got it I have no idea.
