First half is poor to middling. Second half could be better although it still improves on the second half. But it's fairly good overall and definitely has it's moments.
Having nobody concerned about or aware of the shark in the beginning makes the movie dull as hell. And after Brody discovers the burned corpse of the victim of the boating accident it gets kind of silly (They were expecting to find a burned corpse anyway.) Yes of course it makes sense for Brody to want to take action immediately once he realises what might be going on. But it gives him almost nothing to do in the first half.
Yes the audience might feel a bit of suspense due to being fans of the first movie and knowing what the main characters don't know yet. But the movie suffers from the plodding, disaster movie type set up.
Music is great and the 2nd unit photography looks tremendous. It seems they got even more complex shots than the original movie and managed to maintain continuity of picture quality even better. The young cast are generally very good too. But there's just so much dull crap that feels like filler. The gala opening, the bar scene. Just crap.
It is just not as good a yarn as the original movie. Inevitable to some degree, But the movie just feels very perfunctory in places up front. The score for this movie being 60% of the originals is about right. But to give it credit it remains one of the best sequels of a summer movie franchise yet made.
