I wish they would. They are so desperate to push their trilogy though so I doubt it. Unless they are really desperate for better publicity. I still only have my VHS tapes and I am going to be so sad when either the tapes or the player breaks. :(
We shouldn't have to be forced to buy the special editions just to get cheap copies of the originals. Even you can get the LotR theatrical cut over the Extended if you wanted.
I completely agree but that's not the point. The point is if there was someone who wanted the original cut, which is shorter/tighter and all that, then they can easily access the original theatrical cut without resorting to bootlegs, cheap pirate copies or whatever else people have to do to get the original Star Wars trilogy. I, personally, prefer the EE but I understand why people may not and that should be the same mindset these people have when it comes to people who prefer the original Star Wars trilogy.
Yes, LOTR fans have two options for the trilogy by Jackson, but Lucas has deliberately deprived SW fans of the version without all the fancy CGI bells and whistles.
I just choose to live with the Special Editions of Star Wars because they are cleaned up and have fixes, and they are a reason to have at least one of the Prequels there for background, like Sith. Besides, I love the worlds in the Prequels.
I'm sure but it would be nice to just go to Amazon and buy the official Blue Ray. I don't care enough about Star Wars anymore to search all over the country for cheap pirated copy of copies. It's just not worth it to me. But people find a way and I think it's really silly of Disney to miss out on that money and demographic of people.
I mean it took me one second they are online to download and fairly easy to get! and they arent cheap copies of copies. its a scan or original negative prints... its 4k quality....................... I now own 6 different unique versions of each original trilogy film.
clearly I do care enough but to each their own im not gunna hate on anyone who doesnt. who knows maybe they will. maybe its "too soon" still since Lucas was such a fucking prick about it. probably didnt want people overwhelmingly buying the originals and comparing to his shit "true vision" revisionist CGI piece of shit.
I'm pretty sure I read that it was condition of the sale that this could never be done...
Never knew whether to believe that but given the time since the sale which has now past, and given Disney's incredible thirst to cash in on anything Star Wars related, it does seem strange that this hasn't happened yet.

They did release the original sountracks with original running order and track titles after all these years of re-releases and revisionism. Hopefully they'll do the same with the movies.
I have it. some very dedicated people made a "despecialized edition", combing 5 different sources to try and replicate the original. but another group found original 35mm prints!!!
This’s something I’ll always hold a grudge about with George Lucas. I get it, he doesn’t like the original theatrical version because he loves his new cgi “updated” versions. They apparently mesh better with his prequels. But at least he could give the fans both options. It doesn’t have to be included in the blu ray/4K whatever sets, but an option to purchase nonetheless.
I’m not a prequel fan. I’m a Star Wars original trilogy fan & it sucks that we only have the grainy/shit format versions of the originals. Everything I’ve heard/read about it seems to say that not releasing the original versions was part of his Disney contract. Which is such a douche move by Lucas. It’s petty.
When Lucas talked Spielberg into “updating” “E.T.” Spielberg never tried to get rid of the original versions & he even regrets doing the new cgi version at all. Thankfully Spielberg’s experience with ET stopped him from what Lucas had suggested, updating Indiana Jones trilogy…
Lucas is just a straight up dick about this topic. It will happen, one day they will be available without downloading this & that etc etc… but I don’t think it will happen as long as Lucas is alive.
When I bought The Phantom Menace on VHS (way back), it came in a box set with extra features.
In it, Lucas had an interview where he said that a movie is never really finished. There's always more detail to put in, always more story to tell.
The point he was making was that due to either time or budget or technical restrictions, there were a lot of things he wanted to put in, but couldn't. When he had the opportunity to go back and make the additions, he did.
The problem is that by then, Star Wars had already become part of popular culture. It was a mistake to just go back and change things that people had already grown to love.
Of course it will be released. There is no question.
Lucas and others have said for years that they won't release it. So of course...they will.
It's not quite reached that coveted, holy grail status yet. But it will. Once the whole franchise runs out of steam, it will come out and fans will lap it up. And Lucas and Disney will make another fortune.

The fact is, his fixes added nothing of importance to the original trilogy. They did more harm than good, and I'm one of those people who think longer director's cuts usually improve the original cuts. Lucas has lost touch of storytelling and doesn't know anymore the strengths of his own work. Who gives a sh*t if Boba Fett is presented and shown in episode 4 instead of The Empire Strikes Back. Lucas added that retroactively when he realized he had created a popular character. And the same goes for Jabba The Hutt. The original trilogy worked much better when they built up two movies before showing him in Return of the Jedi. The conversation between Han and Jabba added nothing, because it was just the same dialogue between Han and Greedo just in prior scene. The dialogue was moved to Greedo scene probably because the Jabba scene couldn't be filmed in 1977. Either leave the Greedo scene in and remove Jabba, or vice versa. By removing the Greedo scene you would also fix the problem of who shot first. It was just so stupid.
I really hope they do, I’d definitely buy it. Like a few other people here I have my tapes and they’re not going anywhere but it would be awesome to have these cuts on dvd. Disney would make a packet releasing them.
