What is the best joke in the movie?

What is the best gag, joke, or a very long funny skit that happens in the movie?

For me its at the beginning where he is sleeping on the statue and when the national anthem plays he tries to stand while his pants are stuck on the sword (who cant find any ground to stand on).

What about yall?

reply

The opening when Charlie is on the statue!!
I am laughing as I think about it.

reply

I agree. The opening scene with the statue is laugh-out-loud brilliant. I love it especially when he sits on the face of one of the statue's male figures.

reply

i say when at the start just after he talks to the kids just his expression after it raising his eye brows and smiling and walking off.

reply

Definitely the part where he tries to eat the bald man's head. When that guy turned around and took his hat off, with that great look on his face, I laughed my testicles off.

reply

I can honestly say i laughed my ass off when they go to the Dance Club and Charlie starts slipping on the dance floor. ingenious.. that whole scene actually. confusing the confetti with spaghetti was great!

reply

For me, the scene before the boxing match, when he reacts to seeing the KO'd boxer who had loaned him the rabbit's foot for luck.

Quite honestly, one of my favorite scenes was the famous deleted one where the Tramp spots a piece of wood lodged in a street grate and tries relentlessly to free it. It's certainly understandable why Chaplin chose to remove it from the overall film, but on its own the scene is one of the greatest examples of his ability to find humor in most every situation.

I believe the joke that makes me laugh the hardest is when the little Tramp comes back in the house with all these dogs after him just as the singer finishes his tune.

But I also really like the ball of strings, the way he ends up pulling the string from his shirt really fast just because he doesn't want to upset the girl. He gave everything to the girl, all the money he had and his shirt!

My fav is one that wasn't mentioned yet!

When the millionaire and the tramp have a drink, and the millionaire pours all the wine into the Tramp's pants. The wetness in my own pants matched those of the Tramp's. Hysterical.

That, and when he takes the blind girl home and really emotional music is playing, then he gets hit on the head with a flower pot. Gut-buster.

Finally, as he peeks in the window to see the blind girl one last time and spills a barrel full of water all over a fat guy from the downstairs apartment. Just straight goofy.

The flower pot on the head is a joke with such a good timing, how emotional the scene first is and how it abruptly cuts to comedy, this is my favorite scene.

My favorite line is "Tomorrow the birds will sing." It's my favorite line from any movie ever because it holds so much meaning in it, but in the context of the scene it's absolutely hilarious.

reply

Tramp: "drive carefully"
Millionaire: "I'm driving?"

hahahaha so unbelievably funny ... i've started to say that everytime anyone tells me to drive carefully ..

Boxing scene, and when he swallows the whistle

Double Hawk! "I'm awkward"

reply

The boxing scene is great, but what really sells it is when he gets his neck wrapped around the rope atached to the bell. It keeps dings, they start back to the corner, come back at each other again over and over. Absolutely hilarious.

reply

My favorite kind of scene in any Chaplin movie has been when the Tramp tries to steal something, is forced to put it back, and then steals it again while the other person's back is turned. You have to admire that kind of persistence.

Believe me, you don't want Hannibal Lecter inside your head."

The Boxing scene, without any doubt! hehehehehehehe

Money is better than poverty, if only for financial reasons.

reply

Love that scene backstage when he's all 'friendly' to his opponent...heeheehee!!!

reply

The entire movie!!

Seriously though I laughed almost constantly through this.

My favorite scenes are:

Cigar in restaurant
Spaghetti/streamer eating
The statue with the sword in the beginning
The entire boxing match, but my favorite part of that was when the string to the bell was around his neck. (I am cracking up writing this)
The raising/lowering platform in the sidewalk
The millionaire recognizing him when he is drunk and not when he is sober
The bed scene

but my most favorite scene is....

When he swallows the whistle. Holy Crap, I don't think I have ever laughed harder ever.
