What is the best joke in the movie?

What is the best gag, joke, or a very long funny skit that happens in the movie?

For me its at the beginning where he is sleeping on the statue and when the national anthem plays he tries to stand while his pants are stuck on the sword (who cant find any ground to stand on).

What about yall?

For me there are two scenes that are comedy at its best:

1) The dance club scene that takes place shortly after he saves the
millionaire's life, from the time he enters and thinks his hat is stolen
until the end.

2) The boxing scene is just unbelievably funny, especially when they dance
back and forth and at one point the referee and the opponent are fighting.

Just thinking about these scenes makes me want to laugh out loud. Physical comedy is nothing today after you see Chaplin.

I love the bit when Chaplin leaps out of the millionaire's limosine and grabs a discarded cigar butt before a hobo can get it. Then he jumps back into the limo and is driven away by the chauffeur, much to the hobo's amazement.

It's still a great gag, but in 1931 at the depths of the Depression it must've had a deeper meaning for audiences.

My favorite "line" is when Chaplin says "becareful where your driving", and the millionare says "I'm driving"?

My favorite scene is where the tramp is acting all girly with his opponint in the locker room.

Yeh the boxing scene is hilarious.

I like very much the cigar scene:Chaplin, dressed as a rich man, pushes a vagrant to pick a cigar on the floor;and then stares him while going away with his car.
At the party, when a waiter proposes him a sort of flan, which he confuses with a guest skull.

And of course the dancing and boxing scenes.

Oh yeah! Stealing from that hobo was so wrong... especially when he's just a hobo in disguise.

reply

I liked the scene where the rich man tries to commit suicide by attaching a stone to his neck with a rope and then jumps into the water.
Charlie tries to save him and falls into the water himself, the man follows and so on and on.
Hilarious!!!

An incredible movie made up of endless hilarious, poignant, and though-provoking scenes. One of my favorite is the opening scene of the statue unveiling. The muted/muffled voices of the mayor and the female dignitary were Chaplin's commentary on the progression of sound recording in film. As Norma Desmond said in "Sunset Blvd", "We didn't need sound - We had faces." These sounds was actually made by Chaplin talking through a kazoo. Then the body movements of The Tramp trying to get down from the statue, including not being able to solidly stand during the playing of the national anthem (political commentary), and then thumbing his nose at the police. Certainly one of the Three Best Classic Silent Films - also including "Modern Times" and Buster Keaton's "The General."

I love the bit where he confuses the food for the man's head! That was hilarious.

I'm Dexter Morgan. I... can't think of anything clever to say.

reply

Yes, absolutely. The boxing scene is pure magic. Choreographed to almost perfection by the genius that was Charlie Chaplin. Hilariously funny. Arguably the funniest scene in movie history.

reply

I'm with you!!

DUDE I SOOOO AGREE, the girly expressions were HILLAROIUS.

Chaplin drove the Rolls himself, the millionaire never had a chauffeur.

boxing scenes are hilarious of all.

But i just replied to mention one thing that touched me .
It's at the end when the flower girl comes out to give a flower and a coin to the tramp and he tries to run off.
With his cloths all torn off and himself a broke....it was him that made the girl's life but he was ready give up, despite of how much he loved her .

There were loads of moments in the film that made me laugh but that one had me laughing for about 20 minutes, it's brilliant, chaplin knocking him over and then the expression of the hobo - classic!

I just love the restaurant scene. A drunk Chaplin is genius. The Boxing scene is also great, probably the most recognisable Chaplin scene.

Pythonite for life.

reply

Definitely the already mentioned restaurant/dance club scene.

I laugh out loud everytime the Tramp and the millionaire try to fight with someone (or each other) by lowering their jackets off of their shoulders (a lot of people today have copied that and probably don't even know it!)

And the attempted suicide scene by the millionaire: in any other film, the repetitiveness would be unfunny - but it works here perfectly here.

reply

I prefer the dance club scene :)

reply

That's my favorite too. I love when he eats the streamers.
It's such a perfect movie!

Oh man, there are so many scenes to enjoy in this film!!

Well, for starters:

1-The resturant scenes. When he tries to fight; when he eats the streamer; when he's trying to light his cigar, but it never gets lit; and when he just grabs the woman and takes her around the dance floor.

2-The sidewalk scene, where the platform is lowered and raised, almost making it like he's gonna fall in.

3-The boxing scene. Can not forget that! It is absolute classic!

4-The statue scene when his pants is stuck on the sword, and the fact that when the people talk, they sound hilarious. Especially the woman.

Those are my favourites.

The part that made me laugh the most was the boxing sequence, especially the synchronized movements with the referee.

I never make stupid mistakes.
Only very, very clever ones.

reply

The boxing match. It's so funny (although it ends so sad).

I think the elephant on the street is one of the best jokes ever to be presented on screen. And yes, the "dance" in the boxing ring had me howling.

"When we felt the heat, couldn't turn it into fire"

reply

For me, the 3 funniest scenes in the movie are:

1) The tramp accidently starts eating the streamer while eating the spagetti

2) The boxing match is probably the funniest boxing scene ever put on screen

3) The tramp getting his pants stuck on the statue's sword in the beginning of the movie.

I was laughing like crazy when, at the beginning, the blind girl think he's gone and he's looking at her. She then pour in some water for her flowers and then throws it in Chaplin's face. He then tries to get away, wet, without making any noise. I had to stop the DVD 'cause I was laughing too much!

Definitely my favorite movie of all time!

reply

Yes, that's my favorite too! It's the surprise element which makes it work so well.

I never make mistakes. Once I thought I did, but I was wrong.

reply

The boxing scene is possibly the best set-piece of physical humour ever committed to celluloid. They say Chaplin was a perfectionist. This proves it. Genius like that must have been a burden.

reply

FULL OF GREAT GAGS THIS FILM, BUT THE ONE FOR ME IS WHERE HE'S GOT YOU TO SUCH A PITCH WITH THE SENIMENTAL SCENE OF TRAMP AND BLIND GIRL AT THE FOUNTAIN AND THEN.........WALLOP!!! WATER IN THE FACE. A GENIUS.

reply

Im prety sure in sports illustrated whenn they were listing the best sports movies of all time this was on it saying the boxing scene was one of the greatest sports scenes of all time, and that it was (=.
