Hard to be a bestseller in Canada while also being ignored in Canada.
a bestseller in canada could mean a few thousand books.
shareThe minimum for qualification is 10k, and his came in 2nd of non-fiction bestsellers (4th overall), but I haven't found his total yet. But with over 5 million copies sold worldwide, I have a tough time thinking that an obviously popular book from a Canadian author and publisher sold as little there as you're suggesting. And to know he's nuts, wouldn't you (or the entirety of Canada you're speaking for) need to have paid attention to draw that conclusion?
I have no horse in this race. I haven't read his book(s) or bothered to watch more than a couple of minutes of an old interview, so I'm sure you know him much better than I. But I do know he's been a thing the past few years, b/c his name pops up a lot -- so I checked. Controversial, hated by some, loved by others, whatever is going on, he sure hasn't been ignored.
the guy had a breakdown a few years ago and is addicted to sleeping meds. the university of toronto tried to get him help for years. they finally cut ties with the guy this year. he is in no position to tell anyone what is right or wrong. he needs help.
shareI don't dispute any of that, but he seems to have made a name for himself there before that, which is why he's been ripped over what happened later. Random House US actually passed on publishing his book, but their Canadian counterpart didn't. The book idea itself, and the reason why it gained traction, speaks to the idea that he had crossed over. It was due to some public dust up with a figure over some bill in Canada 2 years prior. It went viral, he put up videos of his lectures, and wrote a bestselling self-help book off it all. I wouldn't call that being ignored in Canada. Even his old book from 1999 had been made into a TV series there. He had a minor presence there, that blew up into a major presence there, that blew up everywhere else. I didn't know any of the above until today, not even that he's Canadian. Maybe you did.
shareCompared with Americans, I don't see many Canadians being so desperate all the time for someone to tell them what to do and what to think. So it stands to reason that they don't have as much use for him nord de ligne.
